Long-term, steady commitment. Available weekdays 2–6pm and flexible for exam periods. Provide clear lesson plans, homework support and timely feedback to ensure continuous student progress.
    Rapport Building
I place a strong emphasis on rapport building because students learn best when they feel comfortable, supported and understood. Many students, especially those taking Higher Chinese, approach the subject with fear or low confidence. My first priority is always to create a safe and encouraging learning environment where they feel confident enough to try, even if their Chinese foundation is not strong.

I begin by understanding each student’s personality, learning style and preferred way of communicating. Some students need more patience and reassurance, while others enjoy discussions and interactive lessons. I adjust my tone, pacing and teaching methods to suit each learner. This helps them feel respected and understood, which leads to better focus and engagement.

I use relatable examples, simple explanations and real-life scenarios to make the language easier to grasp. When students realise that Chinese is relevant to their daily lives, they naturally become more interested and more willing to participate. This approach works especially well for students from English-speaking or non-Mandarin-speaking families.

For Higher Chinese and IP students, I also encourage deeper conversations and help them express their thoughts confidently. Many high-ability learners struggle not because they lack understanding, but because they fear giving the wrong answer. By creating an open environment where ideas are welcomed, I help them become more expressive and confident in both writing and oral communication.

As rapport strengthens, students become more motivated and positive toward Chinese. Parents often share that their children become more open, more confident and more willing to study the subject. Good rapport is the foundation of long-term improvement, and I put a lot of care into building that relationship with each student.
    Keeping Up with Curriculum
I make it a point to stay updated with the latest MOE syllabus and assessment trends for Primary, Secondary, Higher Chinese, IP and JC levels. Chinese assessment formats change regularly, so I frequently review new papers, updated question types, vocabulary lists and writing expectations.

For Primary levels, I follow the latest PSLE requirements for picture composition, situational prompts, oral conversation themes, vocabulary usage and comprehension formats. I review recent school papers and updated assessment books to ensure my materials match current standards.

For Secondary and Higher Chinese levels, I stay familiar with argumentative and expository writing formats, idea development, inference questions, summary skills, vocabulary precision and deeper comprehension analysis. I observe common patterns in school exams, such as questions on tone, intention, explanation of phrases and advanced inference.

For IP students, I track the expectations set by major IP schools. These often include thematic writing, current affairs knowledge, personal voice, and higher-level interpretation skills. I include up-to-date articles, sample essays and discussion topics to help IP students excel in these areas.

For JC H1 Chinese, I keep up with summary writing structures, analysis of short passages, oral discussion topics and common exam trends. I also compile relevant reading materials to help students improve content knowledge and expression.

By staying updated across all levels, I can design lessons that are aligned with what students actually face in school. This helps students feel more prepared and confident during tests, assignments and major exams.
    As a Good Tutor
As a tutor, I believe in teaching with clarity, patience and consistency. Many students struggle with Chinese because they have gaps in foundational skills. My role is to identify these gaps, strengthen them, and guide students toward understanding concepts more deeply. I do this through structured explanations, targeted practice and personalised feedback.

I break down difficult components into simple and manageable steps. This includes composition planning, idea development, vocabulary usage, sentence structures, reading techniques, inference skills and oral expression. Once students understand the basic structure, they can apply the skills confidently in exams.

I keep track of each student’s progress carefully and adjust lesson plans based on their needs. When a student is weak in a certain area, I provide explanations, practice and reinforcement until the student shows improvement. I do not rush through lessons, and I make sure that students understand why they are learning certain techniques.

Communication with parents is also important to me. I update parents regularly about their child’s progress, strengths, challenges and recommended next steps. This helps parents feel involved and ensures that the student receives consistent support at home and during lessons.

My teaching philosophy is to help students become confident and independent learners. When students develop a strong foundation, learn how to structure their thoughts and understand the language at a deeper level, they naturally improve in both schoolwork and exams. Many of my past students, including those who started with weak or borderline grades, have achieved significant improvement under my guidance.

I have guided numerous JC students to distinctions in the A-Level Biology examination, focusing on deep conceptual understanding, exam-technique mastery, and precise answering skills that meet SEAB marking standards.
As a practising teacher, I am fully familiar with the latest H1/H2 Biology syllabus, common misconceptions, and question trends. I also integrate practical-based applications and essay-writing strategies to help students tackle higher-order questions confidently.

                    Rapport Building
I believe that in order to build rapport with both students and their parents, ideally is to first show the student that they can improve so as to instil confidence in them and build up their self-esteem, such that they are more willing to face challenges head on as compared to avoiding them. By doing so, should the students show visible signs of improvement be it in results or willingness to learn, parents can then put their trust in us to ensure that their child has a positive outlook towards studying and hope to see an improvement in grades.
                    Keeping Up with Curriculum
                    As a Good Tutor
To be a good tutor is to not only help improve the students grades but to also, change their outlook towards studying, such that they can learn to appreciate the rationale behind the need to study well. Should the student be uncomfortable or struggling with certain subjects, it is best to address it without putting significant pressure on it and instead, address it light heartedly as sometimes when one is not stressed will they then have a clear state of mind and can better take on challenges. Overall, the main idea is to build a bond with them and ensure that they trust themselves and the process.
