I just stepped out of the system so I am well aware of the current curriculu. I was in HQ for 2 years so I am also fully informed of the future Chinese curriculum landscape. As I have many teacher friends in MOE, I will be fully informed of any new movements in the education scene, or the curriculum.
As a Good Tutor
An aspiring teaching scholar, a fervent Chinese language teacher, an ex-MOE teacher who has served the education sector for the last 8 years. An individual full of ideals, beliefs and dreams, she is now stepping out of the system to show Chinese learners in Singapore the true meaning of learning their Mother Tongue with motivation, passion and pride. Learning Chinese is not supposed to be an irksome chore or daily grind that repulses students� learning motivation or interest. It should involve finding fun and meaning in the language that comes naturally for learners. Learners will see that Chinese is relevant and can be a part of their lives. The door of opportunities that the language can bring is infinite. Yes, English might be the primary mean of conversation in our local context, but as long as efforts are made to introduce Chinese to a learner in a new light, one will soon see the beauty and friendliness of the language, and it is no longer a trying relationship, but one that is mutual and inclusive. I truly believe in the importance of creating a sustainable learning environment for the learning of Chinese, that will create a lifelong impact for the learner, beyond just grades and national exams. Once the language becomes living, acing Chinese will no longer be a faraway dream. This is the value I will abide by for my tutoring journey.

    Just like how I tackle the problems in school work I also figure out what students lack and target their weak areas for improvement.
    Rapport Building
    I agree that rapport building is most important. So generally I try to follow the kids needs and only persuade them to focus on their area of weakness if I am convinced they are heading in the wrong direction. For tamil I can handle almost anything on the spot but for mathematics generally I need to come prepared with assessment books. I recommend kids complete the assessment book before class starts so I can mark and go through with them key concepts. I am diligent in turning up for class because need to cultivate good learning habits.
