Rapport Building
I would like to get to know the students' interests and what they spend most of their time doing. The approach to tutoring will depend on the student's learning style as well.
My personal view of tuition is to plug gaps in understanding instead of babysitting. Students must recognise the value of tuition first before any progress can be achieved.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
The SEAB website is a good way to start and be updated on new syllabi.

    • Other English-Teen Success Coaching Programme
      Course Description:
(10 sessions, 1 session per week)

Why Guide Teenagers Towards Success? As the global job market becomes increasingly competitive, we have begun to ask more and more from our teens, academically and emotionally. Without a knowledgeable, supportive guide to help them along the way, teens become stressed, depressed, unfocused, and may even feel powerless to accomplish their goals. In this guide, we introduce theories, activities and steps that will be crucial for the development and wellbeing of all teenagers. Taken from proven historical and psychological research, these activities and techniques have long been ignored at home and in the classroom, simply due to the fact that parents and teachers have never been exposed to these skills themselves. Read on, and make a difference in the lives of teens you know in need. Use these life-changing mindsets to bring them life-long success, beginning today!

The TSC programme has been used in several MOE schools and have helped countless number of students to achieve success in their own terms (academically, or based on their interest such as in sports etc..). TSC has helped students achieve more organisation and clarity with regards to their goals

      The programme has 9 modules:
      1. Goal Setting (using P.E.R.T. Chart)
P.E.R.T is a method to analyze the involved tasks in completing a given project, identifying the people involved, resources and time needed to complete the total project. This helps Teens in the breaking down of goals into concrete, measurable steps.

      2. 7 Habits (Adapted from Sean Covey: 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens)
Teens will learn about effective habits, which will help them with their self-image, friends, academic results and communication with parents

      3. Timetabling and Roles
Teens will develop self-awareness and be proactive in allocating time to their activities and priorities

      4. Setting Mini Goals
Teens are taught to breakdown goals into smaller tasks which they can promotes their self-efficacy

      5. Affirmation and Gratitude
This aids Teenagers to see the good despite facing daily life challenges or struggles when working on their goals, resulting in greater intrinsic motivation and better self-regulation.

      6. Rewards and Regrets
Decision-making using "reward and regret" is instilled in Teens helping them with their internal locus of control and self-regulation.

      7. Study Skills
Teens learn techniques to study effectively to score better in their examinations

      8. People Resource Landscape
Allows Teens to actively be aware of the human resources they have and be more proactive in finding or changing their human landscape. In this module, Teens can see if there are some people holding them back from reaching their goals.

      9. Balance of Self and Relationships
Teens will learn how to pursue balanced lifestyles and relationships. They are taught how to make proactive changes whenever necessary

I do prefer 1.5 hour, 1 on 1 lessons but I am flexible. Upon agreement, I will be able to begin immediately and as long as our lessons are consistent, I see no reason to stop teaching.
          Rapport Building
I have been tutoring since I myself was a student. While I have had other jobs, tutoring is the only one that I have done consistently all these years. Currently I am in my 30s. That is many years of experience.

When I started tutoring, it was only part-time. When I first started, I was in Singapore Polytechnic. I stopped teaching for 2 years while I served my National Service in the Singapore Coast Guard but resumed once I went back out into the working world. After not being happy going to work every single day, I decided to quit my full-time job to pursue being a freelance, full-time tutor. That was 5 years ago now.

A common question I get is if I do enjoy teaching so much, why not become a full-fledged MOE teacher? Financial issues from my younger days aside, I truly enjoy the flexibility of the freelance lifestyle.

My flexible schedule can be to your advantage as well. Need to move a lesson this week to another day? If I have a slot, no problem. Want extra lessons because exams are coming up? If I have the slot why not?

I feel that learning should be a part of life, not something extra that one is forced to do. That's how I approach tutoring. Calm, relaxed but firm when I need to be.
          Keeping Up with Curriculum
I have no issues with keeping up with the curriculum. As I had mentioned above, I have been a full-time tutor for 5 years now. I have seen the Primary and Secondary school curriculums shift and change.

Honestly, a curriculum is not the most important thing. The most important thing is the understanding of the subject matter. For example, if you've spent years doing one job and you're suddenly forced to switch to a completely different sector, you're not actually starting from scratch. You still have all your life experiences. Your understanding of how a workplace operates, your understanding of people's behaviours, your understanding of how technology works. Understanding the idea behind something means you will never have to start from scratch.
          As a Good Tutor
Tutoring is different from being a school teacher. A school teacher teaches the way they are taught to teach. With a standard that somebody else has made up with completely no understanding of a student as an individual. That's not their fault; it's just how the system is.

Being a tutor to me doesn't mean being a teacher. Being a tutor means being a puzzle solver. Each individual student is a puzzle that I have to solve. The way I teach one student very rarely is the same way that I teach another.

More than that, being a tutor (especially at my age) probably means being the first adult outside of a child's family to have a personal relationship with that student. This is a responsibility that I do not overlook and I am very open with parents regarding any issues that their child might have.

By taking an interest in their passions and hobbies, I establish rapport and create a comfortable learning environment. Before exams, I provide encouraging pep talks to boost confidence and alleviate anxiety. Implementing short breaks every 30 minutes promotes productivity and prevents burnout. Additionally, I allocate time to listen attentively to their daily experiences, fostering a supportive relationship.
            Keeping Up with Curriculum
To keep up with the curriculum, I prioritize ongoing learning and collaboration. Regularly attending workshops, seminars, and professional development sessions helps me stay informed about curriculum changes and educational advancements. Additionally, I actively engage in discussions with colleagues, curriculum coordinators, and subject matter experts to exchange ideas and best practices. Leveraging educational resources such as textbooks, online materials, and educational journals further enhances my understanding of the curriculum content and teaching methodologies. Reflecting on my teaching experiences and student outcomes enables me to assess the effectiveness of curriculum implementation and adapt my strategies accordingly. I also participate in professional networks and online communities to stay updated on curriculum trends and innovations, ensuring that my teaching practices remain aligned with the curriculum requirements. Through continuous learning, collaboration, and reflective practice, I ensure that I deliver quality education and effectively support student learning.

In addition to attending workshops and collaborating with colleagues, I dedicate time to personally complete exam papers. This approach allows me to ensure that I can not only solve all questions but also understand the thought patterns required to work through the answers. By immersing myself in the examination process, I gain valuable insights into the nuances of different question types and identify areas where students may encounter challenges. Moreover, this practice enables me to innovate new methods of solving questions, potentially offering more accessible approaches for students. Through this proactive approach to curriculum preparation, I strive to provide students with the support and resources they need to excel academically.
            As a Good Tutor
In my opinion, a good tutor is both strict and patient. Firstly, patience is essential, as it allows the tutor to work through challenges with students at their own pace, ensuring comprehension and mastery of concepts. Adaptability is another important quality, enabling the tutor to tailor their teaching methods to suit the individual needs and learning styles of each student. Clear communication skills are also vital, as they facilitate effective explanation of complex concepts and instructions. Additionally, empathy and understanding help tutors build rapport with students, creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment. Finally, passion for teaching and subject matter expertise motivate tutors to inspire and empower students to achieve their academic goals. Overall, a combination of being strict, patience, adaptability, communication skills, empathy, and passion characterize a good tutor.
