As a Good Tutor: I think it is important to know the curriculum well, other than that, it is important to know the weakness of the students and know which study method is more useful for them. Being able to allow them to understand the idea behind each concepts is essential as it allows the student to be able to apply those concepts. For language, I would try to make it as interesting and engaging for them as it will be easier for students to learn if they find the subject interesting.

I've been teaching piano for the past 5 years, and had students who took the ABRSM exams recently during the March period(2014), and scoring "Merit" for their practical and theory exams respectively as compared to before, where they had only achieved a "Pass" in their exams in the past. I also had students who performed for recitals and achieved the top 3 best players in the category. I also love working with children and appreciate the efforts that they had placed on.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: Since i am still teaching in a music school, i am very updated with the curriculum. I would also often refer to the ABRSM syllabus to counter-check.

Rapport Building: I feel that the best way to build rapport with students is to relate to them. Nobody wants to have a pile of tuition assignments to do on top of school assignments. Therefore it is very important to be flexible and to take into account the students' timetable and curriculum.

As for parents, I feel that a good way to build rapport will be to be honest to them. When updating parents on student's current progress, we should always be honest and also let parents know what they can do best in order to help their child.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: To keep up with the curriculum, a good way will be to obtain latest assessment books. Keeping up with the current affairs is also another way.

As a Good Tutor: I think the basic qualities of a good tutor is to be responsible. In any case that a tutor cannot make it for the assignment last minute, he or she should be responsible enough to inform the tutee or parents.

Also, a good tutor should not encourage spoon-feeding towards students and should make concepts understandable and not just let students memorise.

Rapport Building: I believe that communication is key in building rapport with my students and their parents.

Students need to feel comfortable with their tutor before they can boldly voice their questions and concerns.

I usually have monthly (or when necessary) consultation sessions with my student's parents to keep them updated on the academic progress of their child. Consultation sessions do not have to be strict and can take the form of friendly chit-chats.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: With regard to General Paper, it is critical to keep in the know of current affairs. I make it a point to read the Straits Times daily and browse through online news sites (eg. Nytimes, BBC) to harvest information that can be helpful to my students.

As a Good Tutor: I believe that the basic qualities of a good tutor include:
1) Good knowledge of curriculum
2) Ability to communicate effectively
3) Ability to engage and motivate students
4) Patience (To understand that each student learns at his/her own pace)
5) Proper time-management and pacing of lessons to meet test/exam dates
