Tuition/Teaching Experience: I've been a tutor since my undergraduate days. After my NIE training, I taught in a top school for five years, before becoming a full time tutor in 2005. Each year, at least 2/3 of my students will get distinctions (A1/A2) for their O Levels E and A Math. A number of students improved from a F9 grade to a Distinction grade. Some years, I achieved a 100% distinction rate.

I've taught students from all Secondary levels (Sec 1 to 5), including students from IP, IB, International Schools, and mainstream schools. I am also currently teaching in a tuition center in the Central Area.

Tuition/Teaching Experience: I have taught primary and secondary levels. Primary level-i have thought English, Maths and Malay language. My tutees did not do well at start. But after going through multiple practices and exercises my tutees did well for their exams and attained favorable results. I will go through topic by topic starting with the weak ones and then move up to the more manageable ones. As this would allow the student time to get used to the weak topics and cope with the subject(s). Secondary level-I have thought E-maths and A-maths. My tutee started off being very weak in her E-maths but after much drilling and countless practices on topics that she's weak at especially trigonometry. I will put in more focus on the student's weak topics and make sure they grasp the basic concept before moving on.

Finally, make sure the tutee understand every single lesson and that they are able to keep up with the lessons being prepared.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: Because I studied at NUS High, where the standard and rigor of our course content is very high, I can assist students effectively and promptly with their queries. I also pursue my own self studies during my free time to keep myself sharp while waiting for university proper.

I like to challenge myself, a fact which can be readily seen from how I squeezed in an NUS module in my lat year of high school. I do not make compromises with my own learning, and am therefore well placed to help out with my students at all times.

As a Good Tutor: Tutors should be patient, knowledgeable and humble. Patience is important bacause students grasp different concepts differently. Having the patience to not give up on a student is especailly critical while correcting concepts wrongly understood or internalised.

Another basic requirement of a tutor is to have a large knowledge bank. This goes without saying - a tutor who lacks knowledge is not a tutor at all.

The last point, humility, is often overlooked, especially by many of my peers who provide tution as well. Humility helps you recongnise your shortcomings and work on them. As a tutor, it is pretty easy to mask such shortcomings, at the expense of your own integrity, self respect and students' prospects. Humility brings about the realization that we are not perfect and that continuous work is required to maintain and surpass our standards.

My core teaching methods are mainly socratic questioning, inquiry based questions, drill and practice.

I am a firm believer in bringing out the best in my students. I have taught students who used to fail their subjects to improving to at least an A2.
