After a few sessions, i will probably speak to the parents about the expectations and see whether it is feasible. Though i will commit and do my best to help the child achieve the results and develop interest in the subject, it is ultimately up to the child to see how well he or she can perform.

For the child, i will ask about his interests in studies. Why is the subject interesting and why is it not. This is to see how i can go into the picture and help the child to understand the subject and overcome his fear or disinterest in it.

i believe the way to solve the problem is not just looking at the surface, but digging deeper to the core issue so the problem can be solved permanently.

Rapport Building: Usually I will find out the best way to get the student's attention and the best way a parent employs to discipline their child. This is so as to understand why the student behaves in that way. Additionally, this will provide me with an upperhand in knowing the student better and communicate casually with them before and after every session, as well as during a 5-minute break in between the session. I use this opportunity to know more of their hobbies and favourite subjects in school and why. This enables me to make the current subject I'm teaching as his/her favourite too, encouraging better learning.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: Because I have nieces and nephews in primary school, I am usually in the loop about the curriculum. Otherwise, I regularly visit bookstores and checkout TYS-es and assessment books to get a sense of the syllabus. In understanding current, stringent regulations or requirements of MOE, I will usually check with my fellow NIE peers.

As a Good Tutor: I think a good tutor is not one who pressurises her student into scoring straight As without totally comprehending and understanding the subject matter. A good tutor will not force her student to memorise data after data but not understanding it. In my opinion, effective teachers who have taught me best have engaged in this method : to make the student understand & internalise the subject matter, which calls for it to be logged at the back of their mind, making studying a breeze. Additionally, I will identify the student's learning method in the sense of being visual, textual, kinesthetic etc. In doing so, the student would not be bored in learning and also help them to learn efficiently, not just effectively. A good teacher is definitely one who is able to adapt well, and not one who imposes.
