Rapport Building: I think I love to teach. The amount of satisfaction that I get through teaching is different compared to lets say achieving a deadline. In one of the organization that I used to work for, I was a trainer for some of the courses offered by MOM. I was a trainer for the adults. Of course the skill sets you need in teaching the adults & children or teens are different. But the satisfaction is the same, when they perform well at work or in school, no other job can provide the same amount of satisfaction or fulfillment.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: Teaching in 1998 during my poly days, the standard was different compared to current. Therefore, as a tutor, I have to keep myself updated with the curriculum to remain relevant in the teaching methods and solutions that I'm dishing out. I do go through all these assessment materials at bookshops to see the problem solving methods of certain questions as well as the question formats.

As a Good Tutor: Sometimes students, especially teenagers, they can have a mind of their own. They have their own way of doing things or maybe talking to you. More often than not, they may be a little bit rude towards you. However, as a good tutor, aside from teaching these students of what is within the books, the tutor shall also share with them life skills. Be a motivator and a patient listener.

Commitment / Other Details: I am able to start teaching any time, and am able to commit to tuition assignments for as long as needed.

I have experience teaching ADHD students, and offer reasonable rates. All materials are provided by me and I do not require students to buy any additional items except stationery (must have highlighters).

My schedule is negotiable, and arranged on first-come-first-served basis, with existing students already occupying certain slots.

Rapport Building: I spend time talking to them, and keep the parents updated about their child's progress. It is not so much about the amount of time spent building rapport, but the quality of the rapport built. I have to admit that I don't have any particular techniques, but yet I am friends with many of my ex-students and their parents, so I'm sure that something works!

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I am constantly in touch with friends who are still teaching, and have all the details about the latest programmes and syllabus changes.

In addition, I update my materials every year, so my students have access to shared exam papers, up-to-date practice materials and also content curriculum that I collate on my own so that they need not spend too much time researching the materials that they need.

As a Good Tutor: I believe that good tutors help to motivate students, and help to clear the doubts that students have. Many students are not sure what they are supposed to do, or how to get it done. A good tutor should be able to explain the steps clearly.

Each student has their own learning pace and style, and must receive tuition that suits their strengths while teaching them more about their weaknesses.

Moreover, with the tight schedules that students have nowadays, being punctual is very important.

Most of all, a good tutor should care for their students, and be firm where it is needed but also gentle. Students are all in the process of growing up, and need guidance.

Rapport Building: Although I need to be firm with my students, I also need to be friendly and approachable to them so that they will trust and respect me when I tutor them. Learning more about them will let me adapt my teaching to their learning needs and styles.

Regular feedback with parents is very important. Being able to speak with parents about their child's progress enables the parents to understand how the child is progressing and gives both the parents and me the opportunity to reflect upon the child's learning so that any remedial action can be taken if necessary.

It also builds trust and respect between the parents and me.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I ensure that I am up to date with the current curriculum by staying tuned to curriculum updates by MOE. I do also read up on all MOE news published in the media so I am familiar with what's happening.

Keeping a current copy of the syllabus and checking for any updates or changes is also important as to revise my teaching materials if necessary.

As a Good Tutor: I believe that first impression counts. So, a good tutor should be able to present himself in a professional manner towards the parents and the child. Other than being professional, he must also have a good rapport with the child, being both firm and friendly.

A good tutor must strive to contribute to the child's success. Every minute spend with the child should be productive and worthwhile with no place for idle time. Always be organised and be prepared to adapt to unforeseen changes in the environment so that the lesson can still carry on with or without minimal disruptions.

To ensure that every lesson is productive, a good tutor should ALWAYS be prepared for the lesson, bringing in his own material, resources and expertise to cater to the child's learning. Do not only depend on the books and materials provided by the child. This will also enable him to answer the child's queries with confidence in a clear and concise way that the child can understand. And to do this, he has to be very clear about the child's learning needs and style.

Last but not least, a good tutor always should praise both the results achieved and efforts put in by the child.
