Tuition/Teaching Experience: I believe in understanding, rather than memorising. Firstly, just by memorising, I am confident that with hardwork, a student will be
able to attain good results till the 'o' levels. However, if a student gets to have extra help, I would think that it would be wiser to be
able to understand the key concepts, and interpret the rest of what they would need to complete their examinations from there.

I have had 3 months of tutoring experience after my 'o' levels, in which I have guided a P5 boy from a D in English, to an A in English.
Also, I have designed the tuition curriculum for an orphanage in Malaysia, being 'Rapha Children's Home' in the disciplines of English and
Math. It was such a success such that the local students have been adapting my way of teaching ever since.

Commitment / Other Details: Firstly, I love to teach as I really love that feeling of satisfaction that is gained when students tell you that they are able to understand what you are saying. Depending on the level of engagement in classes, curriculum could be either a breeze, or a technically demanding labyrinth. If it is a labyrinth, well, then I would like to say that I have found the way to take a shortcut, to cut through all those walls and get to the same end-point as well.

So, how is that done?
I would tell you that it is not as difficult as you think, since students mostly know more than they think they know, just that they find it difficult to consolidate the superfluous bank of information. Hence, I hope to be there to help them in that process.

Being a very vocal person, teaching is one of my greatest passions, and I would definitely constantly be giving more if my students are unable to meet up to my expectations. Furthermore, as cliche as it may sounds, I do love learning from the students that I teach as well.

Commitment / Other Details: I just completed my A levels. I can start immediately but can only take time slots that are on Saturday or Sunday, between 9am to 6pm. A session is preferably 2 hours. Lower primary rates will be $25/h and upper primary rates will be $27.50/h (negotiable)

Rapport Building: At the very fist lesson, I will speak to parents about the students' current performance in school and find out their biggest weakness so as to be able to tackle the most problematic area first. I will also spend some time talking to the student to hear what he/she feels about the subject that they are not doing well in. I will let them know it is important to not feel bad about it and don't see me (the tutor) as someone who is exerting additional pressure on them, but instead I am someone whom they can rely on for additional aid if they are not comfortable with voicing their doubts in school. I do give homework, but it will be a reasonable amount that can be completed within a span of a week until the next lesson.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I have cousins ranging from primary 2 to primary 6 and I always look at their text books and assessment books. I also ask them about their teachers' teaching method in school. I am still in contact with my secondary school tutor who has had 15 years of experience in the education system and she keeps me updated on the curriculum as she knows that I tutor part-time.

As a Good Tutor: A good tutor is able to exercise patience and concern towards his/her student. We need to understand that every student has different learning methods and must be able to cater to their individual differences. Sometimes school teachers are unable to cope well with a class of 30 to 40 students because it is too large a range for the teacher to be able to reach out to every single student. Therefore, as a tutor I believe in establishing a bond with my student on a more personal level so that he/she can trust that I will do my very best to help them in their academics. Furthermore, it would be great if the student is able to see the tutor as more of a friend rather than another teacher who is going to exercise authority over him/her. This may act as a deterrence to their willingness to learn from tuition. Having said that, I am not a mere pushover, I do believe in strict discipline and will be harsh if the situation calls for it.

Tuition/Teaching Experience: During my secondary school days, I took on a challenge to tutor my younger brother, who was then primary 6, and managed to push him from a worrying preliminary score of 188 to a PSLE score of 220. I have also experienced helping fellow classmates in examination preparations. These informal tutoring experience helped me realise my ability to understand weak students and to find effective ways to teach a subject to someone. Being a student myself, I can understand what a student needs to excel in a subject - which is to truly understanding concepts, learning how to apply and having practice.
