I have taught a primary 4 and 5 student Malay and Mathematics. Both of them did not perform as well for both subjects. After months of practice and printing out practice worsheets for them to do, they both manage to improve by up to 2 grades. I am able to tutor students anytime as i have finished my A levels. Weekdays night/ evening and in the weeknds would be perfect as i have work at Eden work as a teacher aide in the afternoon until .30 pm. Will be able to commit as long as the parents want me to, as i would like to get some income to fund my university education.
Rapport Building
I normally build rapport by being open and friendly. But most importantly, there must be humour and respect towaards each other. With all these, it is easy to build rapport and get along well with the parent as well as the students i believe.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I keep myself updated with the curriculum by finding out from the students themselves what they have been learning in school. Besides that, i would look up at their home works and their textbooks as reference so that i can better understand the curriculum.

I always believe in this quote. I think passion in helping others, tutoring and the sincerity in their hearts to see their students do well would be the good qualities of a great tutor.     I have one year of tutoring experience within my family. I have helped my younger cousins in their O levels preparations. I am currently a Life Science undergraduate in NUS and fully confident to help any students in their science subjects.

    As a student, I am have always tried to be an all-rounder. I have always tried to score and do well in all subjects. I do not try to ace one, while sacrificing the other. I strongly believe that one can only do well in a subject if he/she develops interest in that subject. Otherwise, nothing makes sense.

    Hence, my aim or approach would be to start by developing some form of interest in the subject before making students practice. I do not like to overload students with homework. I will also share any tips and tricks that I have picked up.

    For students, normally first lesson I spend time getting to know them, their interests, hobbies and activities that they're involved in school. That way, I can know their personalities and what interests them. Mini gifts and incentives along the way depending on their progress is something I try as well.

    As for parents, it's important to meet their expectations as they are paying me and it's their child I'm trying to help. It's important that we're on the same page as to what's best for their child. Being punctual, being accommodating and not changing/skipping lessons often is always a good thing.
    Keeping Up with Curriculum
    I have friends who are teaching or a training to be teachers. I keep in touch with my teachers as well. I can also get up to date syllabus information from the MOE website easily.
    As a Good Tutor
    - Knowledgeable: If I do not have any knowledge to pass on, there's no point.

    - Patience: Students who seek tuition often need extra help than what is provided in school, hence, patience and understanding is required.

    - Bridge between teacher and parent: I need to be the teacher but at the same time be a friend who can teach, motivate and inspire a student.

        As I am currently working in an engineering company with normal shift hours, I am able to start immediately on weekdays (evening/night) and weekends (morning/afternoon).
        Rapport Building
        To build rapport with my students, I will ask about his/her studies, how is he/her coping with the school load, what topic(s) he/she have doubts in and how comfortable he/she is with the school curriculum. With these weekly feedback, I will then be able to adjust the tuition pace and help the student to understand to the best of my ability.

        Not to forget, I will have a Q&A session the parents after each tuition session, so as to understand the parents' concerns and also to let them know about their child's progress.
        Keeping Up with Curriculum
        To keep up with the curriculum, I will go to book stores to buy relevant textbooks and assessment books and familiarise with it, so that I will be better prepared for each tuition session.

        Personally, I find that a student's interest is most important in his/her learning journey. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to keep the student interested in what he/she is learning.                 I can start ASAP and will be able to do so till the end of 2014. I will most likely not be going for any lengthy overseas trips until the end of next year. I am available from Monday to Friday after 6pm (varies from day to day), Saturday after 2pm and anytime on Sunday.

                As a tutor, the best way to establish rapport is to be, and stay dedicated to his/her student. During the lesson, I focus entirely on the student and try my best to guide my tutee along. I refrain from using criticisms and instead more compliments to encourage my students. To build rapport with the parents, I will feed back to them any comments I have, and anything I think that will help the student to better in his/her studies.
                Keeping Up with Curriculum
                I have recently graduated from JC a year ago, and is still quite familiar with the syllabus. I have also just finished teaching an O level student. I update myself with the curriculum by reading through her text book and planning lessons beforehand, and try my best to sync my lesson contents with her's in school.
                As a Good Tutor
                A good tutor's ultimate goal is to improve the results of the student he/she is teaching. Different tutors have different methods, and as long as the end is achieved with appropriate means, he/she is a good tutor.

                I personally strongly believe in mastery learning. This encompasses understanding followed by consistent practice. I think familiarization with every type of questions is the best way to establish the correct thinking process required to solve any question.
