Haven been tutoring since Secondary 4 with various levels of success.

Worked as a relief educator in East View Secondary School and was tasked to cover teachers on long-term leaving, teaching subjects to classes of more than 30 students at a time. I think this has allowed me to handle different kind of students as well as be confident in my teaching abilities.

        I am able to start anytime and will follow through the student until he finish his studies. I can give the promise because I will only have at most 2 students (limit that I set personally) as I feel it is my responsibility the moment I agreed to take up the tuition assignment. I will also not just be a part time teacher, the student can clarify their doubts any time.

            I have approximately 5 years of teaching experience in giving private tuition. During my secondary school days, I begin giving tuition to a P5 student until his PSLE, teaching him Mathematics and Science. From a student who has been failing both subjects, he had shown great improvement in his studies and managed to enter the express stream in secondary school. In my years of study in the Polytechnic, I have taught 2 secondary school students E Maths, A Maths, as well as Chemistry. Both students have shown great improvements in the studies too, with the girl even attaining an A1 for both her E Mathematics and A Mathematics results.               I think it is very important to build good rapport with the students and their parents. I have to be patient and help them to overcome any problems in studying. I have to explain concepts to the students clearly and if they still do not understand, I have to try different pedagogy. I have to talk to parents and get to know them and their children well in order to help the students more effectively.

              The MOE curriculum are always changing so I have to keep up with the new syllabus by reading up books on the latest curriculum, by checking with my ex-colleagues who are still teaching in the school or by checking on the internet.

                  I have been giving part time tuition for several years (Almost 15 years). The students that i taught mostly were below-average. This is very challenging as the improvement that they achieved greatly motivates and encourages me. I had students who did not do well during the earlier mid year exams during Sec 3 but at the end grew interest in the subject that i tutored. Eventually got distinction for their 'O' Level exams.
                  Great tutor require commitment, bonding with the student. He must create an conducive environment not just tutoring but fellow shipping. A great tutor must be able to create complex situation into a digestible easy to follow so that the students can absorb and grew interest in the subject.

                  Rapport and bonding needs time and trust and that is the most important element. As a tutor, first and foremost we have to built trust with the student as most of the time the parents will check with the student after the tutor has left. Create friendship, understand their area of weakness, focus on their ability and guide them through and constantly reinforce them and encourage them. This will lift up their confident, self esteem and they will indirectly motivate themselves to study hard.
