                Typically, for the first few lessons, besides getting to know my students' academic progress through their results, I also like to talk to the parents about their expectations, what their children do during free time, their interests etc. I'll take advantage of this by tailoring my lessons to what suits them best for e.g for a more kinesthetic child, I'll incorporate more interactive learning such as using mathematic manipulatives which is strongly advocated by MOE currently. I also use a rewards system especially for the younger students to motivate them further. I'll track my students' progress in my own monitoring chart which I will record what my students are weak in and whether that has been remediated effectively. I will give periodic formative assessments to test their understanding. Their progress will be shared with the parents monthly for the high progress learners or as and when necessary for those who require more guidance.
                Keeping Up with Curriculum
                As an NIE graduate trainee specialising in Primary English and Mathematics, I am very familiar with their current MOE syllabus. The difference between what we were taught back in school and for the students now is the emphasis on building relational understanding especially in Mathematics. This means that it's not just about knowing HOW to use a formula but knowing HOW and WHY it is being used. Thus, this is what I aim to achieve through the use of manipulatives instead of solely relying on mere drills and practices.

                That said, I do not believe in drilling students with excessive practices without first remediating their misconceptions. Hence, my lessons will first start with going through their school work and asking them for any doubts that they have regarding the topics that they are doing in school. I do not usually give much tuition homework too unless truly necessary. However, parents should also understand that the onus is still on the child to practise more after my lesson so that he/she can achieve factual fluency.

                For English, I do not just use assessment books but also a variety of Children's Literature for comprehension and composition. This is crucial especially for lower primary students to improve their reading and oral skills.
                As a Good Tutor
                I believe that a good tutor must first have a passion for teaching and working with children. Having worked for 5 years in the corporate world has made me realised that there is nothing as satisfying as seeing a child succeed under our guidance. This is why I have finally decided to pursue my childhood dream of being an educator, officially.

                Also, similar to a teacher in school, a tutor requires a lot of patience but also firmness when teaching children. However, having done school teaching and private tuition, tutors are more privileged in terms of time in understanding a child's true strengths and weaknesses and have the flexibility to create a more personalised lesson. Thus, it is extremely important for a tutor to be able to build rapport and trust with the child. It can be as simple as using their favourite cartoon characters as examples when teaching problem sums because this makes them feel more at ease and interested in learning.
