Rapport Building
Most of my students are weak in physics, and I tried to make them be able to see the impact and logic behind physical laws and principles. In my opinion, this is the most important factor as physics cannot be learned through pure mugging. This enhance the interest of the students, thus making them more enthusiastic studying the subject. With most students getting distinctions for their O' level and A' level, this further support my case.

For students weak in math, my aim is to make them feel comfortable with math. Many students have the misconception that math is something that they do not need in future or it's a 'dead' subject which don't require understanding, but every mathematical formula has a very 'easy-to-understand' principle behind. However, this is missing out in schools due to the "results in shortest time possible" approach. This has created a situation where many students, except for minority of the cohort do not understand, thus they are unable do the questions confidently.

Non-academic wise, I tend to do 'pep talk' with my students whenever I feel that they are losing sight of their goals and provide a listening ear for problems they face if they appeared to be bothered and they have no one to talk to. Ultimately, a student is still young and may face issues that they cannot resolve/figure out which will affect their focus.

In summary, my teaching goal is to make students learn and understand what they are learning like it is part of everyday life experience. Thus making them appreciate and feel comfortable with the subjects they are learning.

After going through their education, my ex students are still coming to me for advice etc and I have become family friends to quite a number of families due to the change the parents see in their child.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I am constantly in contact with course mates from university who are teaching in various junior colleges and secondary schools. We exchange ideas and discuss about the lacking aspects in education in schools

MOE has provided up-to-date details of syllabus requirement for each subject and each level.
As a Good Tutor
It is always my aim to be a mentor and a friend to my student.

First, students are already learning under the stress in classrooms. It is not necessary to subject them to the same kind of stress during tuition. I tend to keep the lesson informal and encourage my students to interrupt and speak their thoughts whenever they deem necessary.

Second, it is important as a mentor that I enforce basic discipline like lecturing my students whenever they misbehave or consistently losing sight of what they need to do during tuition and after tuition.

Third, a tutor should point out that a student should study for the sake of learning what they do not know/are not familiar with instead of the goal of doing well for exams. It is important for them to understand that what they are learning is part of their life, visibly or invisibly and they should not study for the sake of exams which will often result in them forgetting' what they have 'learned'.

Lastly, it is vital that a tutor should be able to suggest about possible future specialization the student can pursue based on their capabilities, after all a tutor has spent more time interacting on a 1-to-1 basis with the student than any school teachers.

Tuition/Teaching Experience
I have been a part-time tutor for the past 4 years since the start of my JC education. I initially started teaching to earn extra pocket money and as I took on more assignments, I begin to realize I really enjoy teaching. Thus far, I have taught 5 students and most of them have enjoyed my lessons. As a person who enjoys interacting with her students, I take a lot of pride in ensuring that students find learning a fruitful and meaningful process.

Studying, to me, is a chore; learning, on the other hand, is beautiful. I emerge feeling very very accomplished when I inspire students to love the process of learning more about a subject. This process of learning is long term one and I always try my best to make this process as enjoyable as I can. I place a lot of emphasis on staying current and my students will always be on the receiving end of the week's news at the start of every lesson. This is especially helpful for students who are looking to pursue the JC route.
Rapport Building
Being a journalist myself, I pride myself in being able to reach out to others to communicate with them effectively. That skill is equally vital in teaching as well. As far as my students are concerned, I like to take an informal approach to teaching and base my lessons around analytical discussions. Because of the exclusivity offered by private tuition, I feel that students will find it easier to create meaningful dialogues about compositions and through that, improve their self-expression which is fundamental in essay writing.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I teach English and Social Studies and for the former, I feel that English is a subject that knows no limits and shouldn't be strictly confined to the breadths of the syllabus. I usually go beyond the syllabus for English and focus a lot on essay writing, oral as well as comprehension skills. Moreover, I constantly keep my students abreast of the news as I feel it is extremely important to be worldly. As for Social Studies, I follow the syllabus provided by MOE and offer techniques that students can use to equip themselves against Source-Based Questions and Explanations.
As a Good Tutor
I see myself as a good tutor when my students express curiosity in wanting to learn more about the subject. A good tutor should not only teach, but also influence his/her students to hunger for more. The school demarcates the syllabus and what makes me special as a tutor is how I always try to go beyond that while ensuring that each student has the capacity to learn more. I have taught students who are weaker in grasping concepts and I understand that all students are different so I always try to tailor the pace to a comfortable one and ramp it up when I feel that the student is confident of his/her knowledge and ability.

I have taught my cousin for one year when he was sec 4. During that year, I tried my best to make Chemistry concepts as simple to comprehend as possible and less daunting. I gave him a lot of practice papers (that I got from my juniors and friends from other schools) and compiled common questions, even coming up with the suggested structure and approaches to those questions, This is because I am a strong believer in practice since practice would make one very familiar with the concepts often tested. He told me that he was benefited greatly from my help and his exam results showed a steady improvement throughout the year(from B3 in his end of year exam to an A1 in the O'levels). I have confidence in my techniques, as I too have used them for my O'levels and have gotten an A1 too.

    Commitment / Other Details
I am able to start tutoring anytime, and I am able to commit to a tuition assignment for year, until the student's major exams are over. I can conduct one-to-one lessons at the student's house.
    Rapport Building
I normally like to first understand the student's schooling history, including his/her performance and studying habits. From there, I hope to know his strong points and weak points, so that I can see things in his point of view and help him along better. I believe that this will make me appear on the same ground same my student and that we are working together, and through that, build rapport with my student. Of course, I believe that informing and updating parents on the child's performance is of utmost importance in building rapport with the parents.
    Keeping Up with Curriculum
I frequently read up on my secondary school topics while helping my other cousins who are struggling with their subjects. Also, having studied Chemistry, Physics and Math in JC, I am still rather familiar with the subjects, and I believe that these subjects do not differ much in JC or in Secondary schools. However, I am fully aware of what is required in Secondary Schools, and not bring in unnecessary topics or concepts. Hence, I believe that I am still in touch with the secondary school topics.
    As a Good Tutor
As a good tutor, I believe patience is very important. For me, admittedly, I too, need time to fully grasp concepts. I have also attended tuition lessons that are very fast-paced, causing me to become very stressed and inferior to my other peers. Thus, having these experiences, I am fully aware that of how some students feel and so I wish to adjust a pace that is most comfortable to the student. I am also a strong believer in consistent hard work, so I wish to have constant practices and small "tests" that will help the student to be familiar with the subject, because I feel that being familiar with the subject will help the student overcome his/her fear and gain confidence in the subject, the first step in doing well.

Prior to the session, i normally start with a phone call to the student and/or the parents to get basic information about the student and what he requires out of the sessions. During the first lesson, I will do some self-introduction and also ask questions both related and non-related to the session to get to know more about the student.
          Keeping Up with Curriculum
I seek information from friends who are still studying about the latest books they are using for their course and get the updated syllabus and learning objectives for the various course.
          As a Good Tutor
The basic requirement to be a good tutor is someone who has high level of head knowledge in the required field and also the ability to impart that knowledge to others, meaning to have strong teaching skill. But more importantly, a good tutor must be able to be sensitive to student's needs and tweak (not change) his teaching style according to their needs. He must also be able to instil the importance of consistent efforts in studying and inspire his students to have discipline in following their study schedule, because ultimately it takes consistent efforts to do well in exams.

With a generally easy-going personality, it is easy to build a friendship with students especially children.
            Keeping Up with Curriculum
Not being a full time tutor would mean that I do not have a full understanding of the curriculum, thus i would need the feedback from the student. Assuming it is a one-to-one tuition, i would be able to go at the pace at which the student requires and focus on his/her weaker topics at the same time.
            As a Good Tutor
I would be responsible and dedicated to my student's learning since I would want that as a student. I will also make sure that the student has no worries about approaching me even outside lesson hours to ask questions.

If your child have trouble understanding the teachers at school, I am the tutor for your child. All my students have requested year after year to continue teaching them that I have decided to convert to full time tutoring. Many have enjoyed my lessons and find the subject easier to understand after being coached by me. I conduct clear and structured lessons on a weekly basis.

For students who used to hate maths or science, they find the group tuition sessions with their friends enjoyable and began to love the subjects through the challenging and competitive games we play.

I believe I am able to connect with the student well since I have struggled before in my academic journey in the past. However, each time I was able to break through and perform reasonably well in the major examinations. Hence, I will be able to understand what the student is going through since I have experienced it myself in the past.

                  As a Good Tutor
To be an exceptionally good tutor, one must be able to recognize the importance of having a positive learning attitude and ensure that it is instilled in the student's mental state. This can be done through basic goal settings and the provision of constant encouragements. Without being mentally positive, even if the student has the ability to do well, he/she will sub-consciously sabotaged his/her own performance.
As the cliche phrase goes: Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your actions. And your actions will ultimately become your results. Hence, the very first step is to ensure that the student is confident of his/her own capabilities so that he/she will do the right things to produce outstanding results.

I would like to commend tutor Chan Ching Leong for the excellent tuition he provided to my son
Ching Leong is a caring and professional tutor. He is well versed in the E Math/A math syllabus and has a knack of simplifying the math concepts. He is also quick to pin point my son's learning style and weaknesses and so is able to close the gaps in his Math performance within a short period of time. In less than 2 months, my son's grades improved from F9 to A1.
