One of the students took the 'N' levels last year (Oct-Nov 2013) and achieved a vast improvement from 30 points in L1B4 in school to 14 points in the actual national exams.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I have been giving tuition constantly these 1-2 years and I am very familiar with the current curriculum and exam syllabus. I double check my knowledge with the SEAB syllabuses time to time and also keep myself abreast of the current question trends by reading through past year updated exam questions.

As a Good Tutor: I have a passion for teaching, I gain a sense of fulfilment seeing students improve slowly over time- besides teaching them academically, I also wish to teach them life lessons and help them mature over time. I am very patient when it comes to teaching, and I start from the basics no matter what as I believe in building good foundation before attempting difficult topics/questions. Last but not least, I aim to aid my tutees in gaining their own self-motivation and finding their own drive when it comes to tackling the examinations.

Rapport Building: It's important for parents to be involved in the education of their child. I do not believe in a hands-off approach and would love to work with parents. I will send a monthly progress report detailing out weaknesses in specific sections of the papers and the curriculum covered (sent as a spreadsheet attachment) to keep parents in the loop and update via SMS when the kid is underperforming.

I treat all my students fairly - as responsible individuals - and will not punish them unnecessarily or excessively, even if they make a mistake. Repeated mistakes are given a window of 3 months to rectify.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I have a pool of teacher and tutor associates, and acquaintances in the assessment book publishing units who actively keep one another updated with MOE policy changes.

As a Good Tutor: Good tutors should be able to motivate students. However, given the limited contact time, expecting tutors to be motivators is a tall order. I believe that what is achievable in that short weekly session is for the tutor to engage the student as effectively as possible, and have a distinct overview of the lesson plan for the year. Setting realistic goals and tackling weak links fall under the basic scope as well. Most importantly, I believe that a good tutor should have empathy, and remain personable in all sessions.

Tuition/Teaching Experience: I have given free tuition to juniors for H1 General Paper in Raffles Junior College. It is a misconception that General Paper requires only fluency in english vocabulary. It is a subject that can be trained for. There are specific ways to tackle the essay and comprehension components. I relished my GP lessons the most as I took particular interest in formulating cogent arguments and opinions. That passion enabled me to help my juniors in guiding them. Personally, I feel that GP requires free-willed learning and rigour as well. In order to score well, one must have discipline in writing style and also an appetite for learning to gather contextual knowledge for the essay and application question. I passed this on to my juniors and thankfully, they achieved an A for the subject like I did.

Commitment / Other Details: I am a 2nd year undergraduate from NUS Law. Apart from my lessons, I represent the varsity water polo team. I am able to teach on Mondays to Fridays at any time past 5pm. I am able to teach on the weekends at any time. Once I take on a tuition assignment, I will see it through all the way to the A Levels. I am a South Korean who has been living in Singapore for over 17 years. I am fluent in English, Chinese and Korean.

Rapport Building: I am a young, exuberant student-athlete. Having played water polo, a team sport for over 10 years, I am cognizant of the value of team rapport and encouragement. I approach tutoring as a team sport as well. In any ways that students might be lacking, I would point out their mistakes and work them through positively by repeated reminders and encourage them for their merits as well. Having been a JC student not too long ago, I still remember my fondness for the kind, friendly teachers who appeared to be on a similar wavelength and my dislike for critical, hot-tempered teachers who maintained an air of authority over the students all the time. As a result, I would display the same affable attitude towards my students. That creates a far more productive and positive environment for learning.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: General Paper does not change in curriculum. However, it is largely depending on contextual knowledge. Hence, I require students to research, read and compile important facts/statistics on current affairs or pertinent topics that are likely to appear for examinations.

As a Good Tutor: I am friendly, patient and outgoing. My passion for GP has not dwindled even though I took the exam years ago. I believe both the student and tutor need to make an effort to achieve a commendable grade. Hence, communication between tutor and student is essential. As a team player, I will have no trouble communicating with students.
