Commitment / Other Details: I am able to start in June 2014 and continue from there for as long as it's required. My schedule is flexible, and I can do both one-to-one and 2 pax group tuition.

Rapport Building: I believe it is important to build a good relationship with the parents so that both of us can work together to bring out the best in a child. I will usually talk to the parents after every tuition session, to feedback about their children and at the same time, talk about some non-academic stuff to build up the relationship. As for the students, I will put in effort to make small talks during the lesson, to understand more about the student's character. And definitely, I will incorporate some sense of humour in the session.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I would read up on MOE's guideline for the syllabus, and as different schools have different curriculum structure, I will try my best to look up the curriculum structures of each individual school. And definitely, I will ask the students what topics the school is teaching currently so as to keep in pace.

As a Good Tutor: Sense of responsibility is very important as a student's results are put into your hands to improve it. As such, a tutor should try his best to improve the results, and if he feels that he is unable to improve the situation, he should refer the student to someone else. Also, I feel that a good tutor would go beyond academics and sometimes help the students in terms of motivating/counselling them if those are the factors obstructing their results. And at the same time, the tutor would make links with real-life applications so as to make lessons more interesting.

This is the first time I am applying through a tutoring agency. I teach Upper Secondary E math, A Math, Chemistry and Physics. All of my students did well for their O'Levels. 3 out of 4 got into their Junior College of choice
I consider myself as a warm, friendly and easy going tutor. I am patient. However, my ultimate goal is for my student to score. Keeping Up with Curriculum: I get most of my materials from my ex tutor who is currently a full time tutor.
I also purchase the latest edition textbooks and ten year series to keep up with the curriculum.

As a Good Tutor: Preparation- Know what you are going to teach before you teach it. Spend time in preparation and reading before the tutoring session. Make it a goal to learn something for yourself. Don't rely on stock knowledge or what you've already taught in the past.
Positive outlook- A positive, optimistic outlook that no matter how bad or how good a students academic situation is, that it can be improved or made better through proactive responses.
Passion - The desire to help others, to be a servant leader within your limits. It's the gut feeling response, not the cool, pious intellectual response of a person who knows it all. It comes at the point when you take your students learning personally. This does not mean that you loose all sense of professionalism, it just means that you are communicating on a deeper level your faith in your students and your commitment to see them learn and grow.
Open mindedness - Although you are the teacher, you also have your blind spots. There are also other points of view and better learning paradigms. Keep an open mind and you'll learn from any situation - even from your own students.
Reliability - Nothing speaks louder, and builds more trust and confidence in your students than when you are reliable. Reliability isn't just being punctual, its conforming what you say to what you do. Don't fake a caring attitude, don't make promises that you don't intend to keep. People have expectations, and when you are able to confirm what you say, either verbally or non-verbally, you are been reliable.

Tuition/Teaching Experience: I am currently a Medicine undergraduate studying at NUS. I previously taught Sec 2 and Sec 3 Biology and Mathematics at BPGHS. I've been tutoring for 1.5 years and have taught numerous students (1 improved from F9 to B3 for 2014 O Levels Math after being taught by me for 9 months).

My style is that I will usually go through the key concepts of a topic with them, and explain common misconceptions made by other students. After which, I will let them try different questions that I have selected, during the class itself to assess their understanding. These questions are of varying difficulty levels, from past year exams and those which are commonly seen in exams. I will then mark their work and explain their mistakes to them.

Rapport Building: It depends on their personalities and characters. I try to understand their expectations of me as well as of the tuition sessions, and I try to push them to where they would like to be. I will try to plan out for them, and set targets for them e.g. by this time you should be able to get.... and so on. It is easier and better if the students are on the same page, so I will try to get them to see the end goal, and what we have to do together to reach there. It is also important to let them feel and know that they are not alone and that we as teachers will always be supporting them.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I recently graduated from JC, so I am rather familiar with the A Levels syllabus. I will also check the MOE syllabuses before taking on students.

As a Good Tutor: Good tutors must be dedicated and committed. This means he/she must have the heart to teach and must want the student to excel as much as the student himself/herself wants. Good tutors cannot give up on their students and must have the patience and determination to follow them through all the way, even if it gets tough. They must be willing to find answers for the tutees even if they are unable to come up with solutions for them immediately. I personally am still my tutee's tuition teacher even outside our tuition lessons. She can call or whatsapp me questions, to which I will solve and answer as soon as I can.
