Tuition/Teaching Experience: I am able to reflect on my past teaching techniques and learning behaviour as a student. I recalled the thought process I had as a student when attempting to solve similar problems and tried to guide students using similar thought process. I will also gauge student's level of understanding and thought process. I would guide students along by prompting them with more questions to set them thinking and deriving the solution on their own. This was because I wanted them to learn the thought process from approaching the question to deriving the solution.
I have also formulated teaching and learning techniques to encourage higher order thinking and independent learning in students to stretch their potentials, significantly improving the Mathematics grade of 2 students from C5 to A2.

Tuition/Teaching Experience: I had tutored and mentored an offender's child for 6 months earlier this year. Even though the child is academically weak, I managed to raise his level of understanding in all his 4 subjects. I have recently commenced tuition for two lower sec students.

I was from the 4-year VJC Integrated Programme and am a firm believer that in order to do well, one has to understand the concepts and be able to apply them. Better still, if the student is interested in the subject and is able to see real life applications, learning will be much easier. Furthermore, I held various major leadership positions and was involved in social projects in VJC while juggling my studies. I was shortlisted for interview by the PSC board. As a Good Tutor: In my opinion, good tutors should not only be able to teach content well, but imbue in a student a genuine interest in the subject through an interactive pedagogy. This was what I realised as an Integrated Programme student where I was given the freedom and time to explore a subject in greater depth beyond the confines of the syllabus. This allowed me to develop my interest in International Relations. Therefore, I hope to be able to develop in my student a genuine interest for the subject.

A good tutor should also be someone who is able to pass on life experiences and inculcate soft skills in the students. Having served as the President of the VJC Global Affairs Society and being active in community events (eg as a MCCY REACH Youth Ambassador and a volunteer at the Meet-the-People's session), I believe I am able to help my students to develop in a holistic manner.

Rapport Building: Communication is necessary, a proper self-introduction to the parents and children during the first meet-up is important. It sets the first impression which always last. Subsequently, discussion with parents about the progression of their children would always be initiated by me as the common goal we have is always the grades of their children. Thus, coming up with the best way to approach their children would be advisable to discuss with the parents as I feel that they should be the one who understand their children the best.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: Listening from both the parents and children may seemed enough, however, my practices would be to go extra mile to seek assistance from the children's respective school teachers. In order to work out the best approach for each individual child to improve not only their grades, but as a whole, their well-being.

As a Good Tutor: Communication, Patience and Understanding, are important traits not only as a good tutors, I felt strongly that in general people should have these characteristics, and they would be a better person to work with in life.
