Rapport Building: At the start I would try to have small chitchat sessions with the student and his/her parents to understand more about the student so as to come up with the best teaching method for the student. I believe that different students have different style of studying/revising. Also, by knowing the student better through parents or the student him/herself, I would be better informed of the student's weakness or areas which requires improvement. I like to share videos with students to aid in their understanding, or to start a discussion, which may also aid in building rapport with the student, on top of enriching the student's understanding on certain concepts.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I will constantly keep track of the student's tests results in school as well as conduct tests or revision sessions to keep track of the student's progress and understanding of certain concepts.

As a Good Tutor: I think a good tutor needs to be responsible for her student. She is required to ensure that her student achieves a better understanding of concepts taught in school and prepares the student well for any school tests or examinations. A good tutor should also, as far as possible, cater to any request from parents and be flexible in her teaching.

I've been a peer tutor in my polytechnic for certain modules and many of them ended up getting excellent grades, following a scholarship and I highly believe with my experiences on hand, I would be able to impart apt analytical and technical skills which would aid in the developmental progress of a student.

Rapport Building: I would usually seek to understand the current situation that the student is in and comprehend their studying methodology. From there, I would be better able to target the root cause of the problems and hence, communicate with the child better. Furthermore, with an in-depth understanding, it would be easier for an active communication amongst the parents, the child and myself. Forging a deeper relationship would allow for greater and more interactive sessions which would be more beneficial and productive for the student.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: Constantly practise, look through assessment and textbooks to be in sync with current curriculum. Furthermore, keeping in touch with a few other tutor friends which I have whom is also coaching the same level as me to ensure benchmarking and consistency.

Teaching is his true calling and he trained to be an educator at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University in Singapore

He served as an Economics and Project Work tutor at Temasek Junior College for five years while offering private individual and group tuition classes for A-Level economics students. Keeping Up with Curriculum: Mr. Alastair Tan reads widely to keep abreast of current economic issues and this enables him to teach students application skills (that most struggle with!) using real-world examples to help students understand the world around them and case studies better. He also has connections with teachers from various top Junior Colleges that provides updates with curriculum and various good resources that can be used for practice.

As a Good Tutor: Mr. Alastair Tan believes in helping students to understand that Economics is a study that aims to comprehend the complex world by first, simplifying it. Engaging them by building blocks of understanding to make sense of what is going on around them. Not only is he passionate in the mastery of the subject, he places great importance on fundamental academic and application skills by providing structure and scaffolding necessary for students to excel in tertiary education.

Tuition/Teaching Experience: I am able to reflect on my past teaching techniques and learning behaviour as a student. I recalled the thought process I had as a student when attempting to solve similar problems and tried to guide students using similar thought process. I will also gauge student's level of understanding and thought process. I would guide students along by prompting them with more questions to set them thinking and deriving the solution on their own. This was because I wanted them to learn the thought process from approaching the question to deriving the solution.
I have also formulated teaching and learning techniques to encourage higher order thinking and independent learning in students to stretch their potentials, significantly improving the Mathematics grade of 2 students from C5 to A2.
