I believe every student have a different strength and weakness to expound upon and it is the tutor's responsibility to find out how to help the student improve. I update the parents regarding their child's progress and try to get them involved in motivating their children to learn.

I think tutors have it a lot easier than school teachers because we have the privilege of getting to know our students both as a friend and as a teacher. In a smaller group or 1 to 1 setting, it is important to know our students at their level and explain to them at a level where they can understand. No two students are completely similar. Thus, learning to help every student to better their strength and improve their weakness is an important skill required of a competent tutor.

    I have 20 months of experience teaching in Republic Polytechnic and giving tuition in 2 tuition centres, which span over a period of 13 years. In Republic Polytechnic I was facilitator for Mathematics and Enterprise Skills and I taught around 100 students using Problem Based Learning as advocated by Republic Polytechnic. In SmartLab Education Centre I taught around 40 students in the following levels/subjects: 1) Secondary 1 to 4 Mathematics 2) Secondary 1 and 2 Science 3) Secondary 3 and 4 Physics 4) Secondary 3 and 4 Combined Science. My experience teaching Secondary school Mathematics will be helpful to me teaching Primary school Mathematics. I have also started teaching P3, P4 and P5 Mathematics this year.

        There are many qualities in which a good tutor should have. The most basic quality is to be knowledgeable in what he/she is teaching. Other important qualities include the ability to figure out what the student is weak in and also knowing the best way to help the student to overcome the hurdle. Other than the technical skills, soft skills such as communication skills are important as well as it will form the basis of how the tutor and student interacts. With good communication skills, the teacher will be able to teach more effectively.
