Keeping Up with Curriculum
There are certain resources that I look to utilize in order to stay in touch with the latest curriculum. These include published articles on government sites, MOE policy documents, school reform reports and research materials. Additionally, I am currently engaged in relief teaching in schools and that provides me with an avenue to connect with current MOE teachers. This network is an important source of information for me to stay relevant to the practical changes taking place in the curriculum.

Furthermore, I am part of certain specialized social media groups formed for educators. This is a quick and invaluable way for current teachers and tutors to stay on top of the latest updates by engaging and discussing with fellow educators. I also look to leverage on public materials found in the national libraries such as updates teachers guides and resource materials to keep in touch with the main updates. I frequent the SEAB website as well to review the syllabus for major examinations in order to keep tabs with the major developments for these critical examinations.
As a Good Tutor
There are many qualities of a good tutor and I have picked 4 key ones and these are also the qualities I stand by.

1. Committed

Most tutors work on a 1-1 basis and it is important to be committed and build a strong, personal relationship with their students. Working on a 1-1 basis provides the opportunities to work on a specialized way with the student towards working on their specific areas of improvements. As tutors do not have the legal obligation to follow through with a child all the way, a committed and responsible tutor is probably one of the most important characteristics of a tutor as frequent change of tutor can be highly disruptive to the child's progress and morale.


2. Patient

Most students who require tuition need that extra help to understand the curriculum. A good tutor must understand that certain topics may be more difficult for a student to grasp and taking things slower for them is essential. A good tutor should exercise patience when a student is having difficulties understanding a certain topic, no matter how simple it may be. Even if they ask the most basic of questions, a good tutor will always demonstrate patience and willingness to explain in further detail until they are sure that the student is ready to move on.


3. Adaptability

With individual tutoring, adaptation to the needs of every individual student is key. A good tutor will understand that not all students understand concepts in the same way. Tutors must be able to pick up hints when students do not understand and try alternative approaches to present the materials.

4. Diligent

Diligence is key in most areas of work but it is especially important for the role of a tutor. Students who engage a tutor are usually looking to improve in certain areas of studies. No matter how hard-working a student may be, if the tutor is not committed to working hard in staying relevant with the curriculum or being diligent in finding the right methods, the student will not be able to improve effectively. Diligence in preparing the right materials and staying relevant to the topics being taught is key towards being a good tutor.

          As a Good Tutor
          My tutees' grades improved tremendously and I am always patient even with the most difficult kids. My passion for the subject empowers me to impart to them the knowledge and allows them to discover the joys of learning in the easiest way.
          I teach by examples and illustrations if necessary. Practice makes perfect and I do give mini pop quizzes every now and then. I always revise with the kids any concepts that are unclear to them and I give them incentives if they achieved a target we made together. I take it upon myself to see that there are improvement made.

              I am well-versed when it comes to the syllabus that my students are going through and I will be able to communicate effectively and relate to my students better as we do not have a huge age gap.
