I have been a part time tuition teacher ever since I was an undergraduate and it has always a pleasurable experience working with children. My philosophy in teaching is to make learning an interesting journey for the children as I believe that learning is at its optimum when it is enjoyable. As children face a lot of academic stress nowadays, I find it very important for educators to take good care of their psycho-emotional well being while helping them to push their limits. I do hope that my background in psychology would be useful in motivating my students as well as equipping them with good coping skills.

    Keeping Up with Curriculum
    I will keep up with the curriculum by reading the school textbooks and supplementary books that are closely related to MOE standards.
    As a Good Tutor
    Good tutors need to understand the student's learning style, such as learning by seeing, touch, etc. Especially for science, I believe explaining through textbooks is not sufficient. Educational videos such as science experience is one of the many ways to make lessons more interesting and understandable.

      I am able to start immediately, and I am able to commit long term. I am looking towards 1 to 1 tuition.

      As I am currently doing internship at office hours, I hope that I can start from 7pm for my tuition. Eg: 7pm-8.30pm/8pm-9.30pm etc.

      As a start, I would communicate with the students' parents to know what they expect of their child so that I could work towards it. It is important that I communicate and understand the expectations of the students' parents so that I know how more about the pace I should go. It would be great if I can understand my tutee's interests in the subject and work towards it. If he/she does not like the subject that I am teaching, it would be great to know the problem so that it would be easier to work towards it.
      Keeping Up with Curriculum
      At the beginning of every lesson, I would check with the student on what they had learnt in school, so that it would ensure that I am keeping them on track, or even better, so that I could help them to be ahead of the other students in school, as long as they are able to catch up.
      As a Good Tutor
      As a good tutor, one should have passion in teaching. One should be able to build a strong relationship with both the tutee, as well as their parents. It would be great to have a good relationship with my tutee as well as their parents so that I know that I could communicate with them easily. If my tutee does not have a good relationship with me, he/she might feel afraid to voice out his/her concerns regarding the subjects to me.
      It would also be easier to get the tutee to listen to me if there is a certain level of respect, trust and connection.

      I feel that a good tutor should be able to communicate well. As a tutor, I can communicate with my tutee's parents by setting goals for the tutee together. This would help me to understand what my tutee's parents would expect of their child and I would know how to achieve that. I could also communicate my tutee and set goals with my tutee together. For example, we can set a goal to achieve A grade for Mathematics together. When we communicate and make plans together, it would make them feel like they are engaged and will hence help them to participate in lessons better.

      Of course, one of the most important basic qualities of good tutors is to have sufficient and quality content. Without knowing what one is teaching, there is a risk of tutoring the wrong information to the child, which is the opposite of what we want in a tutor. Hence, this means that a good tutor should always be willing to learn new things, to catch up with the latest syllabus, and to ensure that the content that they know is always accurate.
