As a Good Tutor: I would start by going through the student's school work first to clear any doubts about last week's materials. This will be followed by going through some new material in preparation for the upcoming week of content that will be covered in school. I believe this gives the student and edge and deeper understanding of the material when it is reiterated in class again. Lastly, I will be going through some sample questions with the child. As a Good Tutor: Being responsible is key. As a piano teacher, my practice is to pass the student a notebook. Each time i will write what i had gone through in class with him and then immediately the next week i know what's going on and proceed with what i had left off.
Knowing your tutee's strengths & weaknesses & commitments. Knowing their strengths and weaknesses will help the lesson. Also, commitment wise, if they have huge work commitments eg many tuitions, i won't give too much homework because it doesnt help if he turns up for class not doing any work.
