I spend my first lesson trying build relationship with the student, as well as good impression with the parents.
I'll prepare the topic beforehand, and familiarize myself with the questions prepared before going for lessons.
I do ask about the students workload, and give homework that is suitable for their own pace.
Occasionally I will prepare treats, and rewards for students who often complete homework assigned.
I believe understanding the student is part of being a tutor as well. Each student deserve a teaching method that suits them most, instead of having them adapting to the tutor style of teaching.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I keep myself updated through reading new editions of Mathematics book. The latest book I've updated myself with is A. Maths 9th Edition by Shinglee. This puts me in touch with the latest syllabus and to guide students better.
