My student's English Language foundation was weak as it is not her first language and she began school in Singapore only in secondary 1. I gave her intensive tuition for her prelims and O levels, focusing on factual writing. Our hard work paid off when she passed well for the O levels.
Secondary 1-2 English and Mathematics - I tutored a student in English and Mathematics. She failed PSLE Maths and started tuition before secondary 1 began. I strengthened her Maths foundation and encouraged reading newspapers and academic magazines, never spoon-feeding knowledge. Commitment / Other Details: My academic strength lies in writing and I scored A for GP in Anglo-Chinese Junior College. I am willing to give tuition more frequently especially during the exam period and can recommend suitable assessment books and guidebooks to help individual students progress at a good pace.

Rapport Building: I start by letting the student take charge of their own learning - tell me your goals and how much effort you are willing to put in (varies depending on their school cca). By studying their goals and their foundation in the studies, I recommend a suitable pace of learning, typically by starting with intensive practising on topics which they are weak in. After I give homework on the first lesson, from the second lesson onward, the first hour or so is devoted to questions from students about revision or new topics taught in school. I will go through the difficult topics before starting to go through the homework I had set. I don't spoon-feed knowledge or information - I believe in guiding a student's train of thoughts in understanding a subject and helping them navigate a new concept.

I will also discuss the student's progress with their parent or guardian every month or whenever necessary, when they so request to find out more about their child's/charge's progress.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I keep closely in tune with the latest social and economic news and read widely.

As a Good Tutor: A good tutor assists a student in her studies, adds a new dimension to the way she learns and reinforces concepts taught in school through providing extra guidance. A good tutor neither spoon-feeds information and knowledge nor does she merely gives answers without explaining the rationale or concept behind the logic. She enhances her student's learning.

Preferred day/time: Mon-Thurs (7.30pm onwards) or Sat/Sun (flexible)

Rapport Building: I interact with many people (strangers or otherwise) on a daily basis and have minimal problems with building rapport. I'm easy to talk to and ex-students have feedback to me that i'm not too fierce or strict, unlike other tutors they have had. I find it easier to get the student's attention if I behave more like a friend than a teacher, which has proven effective from past experiences.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I have close friends who are full time teachers in Primary and Secondary schools. If necessary, i can approach them readily for updates on current curriculum.

As a Good Tutor: 1) Keeping the student interested and focused throughout the 1.5-2 hours sessions (especially so for primary school students). in such cases, like to give toilet breaks every 30mins for relatively active students.

2) Boosting the student's morale. Students usually second doubt themselves in fear of giving the wrong answer.

3) Punctuality. Start and end each session on time.
