Rapport Building: Gradually, although I tend to put in more effort at the start and then let things occur naturally as time passes.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I won't keep myself updated with the school curriculum until I have a student under me. Should this be the case, I'll ask around, lurk on online forums and do my research + assessment book shopping.

As a Good Tutor: Stamina: Literally, physical stamina to keep up with the energy levels of younger kids. Mental stamina as well, to be able to continue to give one's best to the student one is teaching. I have a healthy amount of stamina and patience to work with kids who are less attentive than they could be.

Responsibility: Knowing that a child's education is in your hands and being able to remain accountable to the standards set.

Humility: Always being ready to teach, but ready to learn from your student as well.

As a Good Tutor: To guide the students when they are uncertain, to praise them when they got the concept right and to constantly assure them that they are able to do it. This will give them the confidence to succeed. As a tutor, I believe our job is to identify the students' weaknesses and help them to work on the area. Understand the students and find a method which is easier for them to apply to their work hence enable them to remember and apply by themselves. Give them sufficient guidance when we are around and ensure they are able to do the work by themselves after lessons. A good tutor should constantly probe the students and help them to think and resolve the problems and not simply provide them with answers. I believe in teaching the students to fish rather than giving them the fish.
