Rapport Building: I am a simple, friendly, down to earth person, and likes to chat. Usually i ask how my tutee is getting on with work, school or any interesting things happening in school as to get to know him/her better. You can also find some common topics other than work to chat with. It also creates a more relaxed atmosphere during the lesson, allowing the tutee to open up. I also usually chat with the parents, to get to know them better.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: Currently i am in my 2nd year in NUS, studying Civil Engineering. In my course, there is constant use of curriculum incorporated with the new knowledge being taught. As a result, with constant use and practice, you become proficient and able to keep up with the curriculum. I also refer back to my old notes, or go to bookshops and skim through new textbooks to keep myself updated on the current curriculum.

As a Good Tutor: I like to use layman terms to explain, so that the tutee is able to see the everyday application of the knowledge. Good tutors also need to be proficient with the knowledge they are teaching

Commitment / Other Details: I am currently an undergraduate at NUS. Even though I have to attend school, my timetable is flexible so I am ready to start tutoring immediately. I am planning to commit to tutor assignments for 3 years, complete my course of study during the fourth year and perhaps continue with tutoring even after I graduate.

Rapport Building: I have a good affinity with children (below 12), probably because of the frequent interactions with my younger cousins and neighbours that I get. There are times where coaxing works best and there are times where I have a be firm to get my idea across. It also dependent on the nature of their character I guess. To my younger students, I would like to view them as my younger siblings when guiding them through their work.

As for older students (12 and above), I would treat them as my peers instead. It is more likely for them to trust me and better absorb my teaching if they see me as a friend rather than a tutor, which often has a strict connotation to it and this may slightly affect the students' learning if they are not comfortable around me.

I admit that I do not have much experience when dealing with parents, but as much as possible, I will try my best to put myself in their shoes and acknowledge any concerns that they may have regarding their children's performances.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I understand that the syllabus changes throughout the year and what I have learnt in school may not be applicable to my current students. Firstly, I will always consolidate with my students on how their syllabus is like and at which stage is their curriculum. I can always retrieve the syllabus from the MOE website, however, in the event that my student is unaware of their progress, I will remind them constantly to take note of their progress in school prior to the tuition day. With all the information I need, I will then create a timetable for us, me to keep track of my teaching progress and my student to prepare in advance and catch up with the learning process.

As a Good Tutor: To me, the most important quality of a tutor is to believe that every student have the ability to acquire knowledge, regardless of their pace of learning and their willingness to learn. Thus, it will be my job to be patient and accommodate to my students' learning pace and make my teaching engaging so that they are willing to learn. This is when other qualities of a good tutor sets in. A good tutor should always have faith in their student.

Precelia, a sec3-sec4 Express student, was poor in her English and marginally passing her maths and sciences. After coaching her for a year and the half, she constantly scoring As for her maths and sciences and a B for her English

For Cecilia who was failing every subjects, i had to bring her back to basics. After spending months on her basics, then we processed on to tackling questions and ensure she understood what was the subject demanding her to know. Slowly we progress on to harder questions.
