I volunteered as a tutor to underprivileged students at a children's home on a weekly basis when I was in junior college. During this time, I guided primary school students in English, Maths and Science.

When I moved to the UK for my tertiary education, I continued tutoring underprivileged students at a high school in Bristol. This time, I was helping to prepare students for the GCSE Mathematics examinations.

I am awaiting university enrollment this coming August 2016, and my future course of study will be medicine in NTU.
            Rapport Building
I believe in nurturing an interest in learning within my students because I believe this is the key to doing well in the long term and will eventually help them to find out their passion/ambition for themselves in the future.
            Keeping Up with Curriculum
As I have already been teaching primary school children for quite some time now, parents can be reassured I am still up to date with the MOE syllabus. When it comes to secondary/JC students, I will definitely make the effort to refresh myself on the latest topical changes before coming to lesson. After all, when it comes to subjects like maths and science, questioning methods may vary but concepts always stay the same, therefore I am confident that I can still teach them well.
            As a Good Tutor
I believe that when it comes to conceptual subjects such as Maths and Science, a good understanding of content is key to doing well. For me, I would first assess the topics which my student is strong and weak in. Focusing on the weaker topics, I would create notes/mindmaps together with the student to help bulid an overall picture of the content. Of course, in order to do well in exams, the next step would be to practice topical tests questions of increasing difficulty, before moving on to full exam papers. For my older students, I am more than willing to share my experiences in navigating the university admission interviews!

I believe that every child is unique. It is important to find a way to engage a child so that learning can be fun and fruitful. I am familiar with the syllabus. I believe that the trick to academia success is to break down the theories during initial learning then apply knowledge in rigorous practices.

                    Commitment / Other Details
Being an undergraduate who is going on Year 3, I will be able to commit to weekdays evening and weekends. I believe in building a strong relationship with my students - one where they can rely on for reliable support during this learning journey.
I am able to start as soon as second week of June and will commit to my student as necessary.
                    Rapport Building
Learning is an experiential-based endeavour in life and hence, I believe that the experience that my student has under me is crucial. No man is an island and hence, I will always be patient and encouraging in my conduct and I believe that this helps to build a positive and healthy learning environment for my students. Beyond an academic tutor, I believe in being a friend to my students as well, one who listens and shows genuine concern for his well being.
                    Keeping Up with Curriculum
Ensuring that my students understand the core of every concept is crucial to help them excel independently. To avoid confusion, I would prefer to pace alongside the school's curriculum accordingly for my students. I will always ensure that there is sufficient buffer time before examinations to recap with my students and assign them sufficient practice.
                    As a Good Tutor
A good tutor is one who sees the potential of his students even when others do not believe so. And this is my mantra during my tutoring endeavour. I believe in recognising the efforts of my students and encouraging them through small improvements along the way.
