I find it a joy to teach children, especially when they ask questions that are witty yet a little silly at times, it makes me think out of the box to reply. It's very different from textbook answers that sometimes can be quite technical and "boring" :) Everyone can only remember if they understand, not remember by hard and reproduce. People are valued for their skill, creativity not reproduction :)
Due to a relatively busy schedule (studying and external activities), I could only take up part-time teaching. I have taught at a Family Service Centre and Primary School, both for a period of 3 months each and as a tuition teacher for half a year. Currently working as a games facilitator in Primary and Secondary schools.

I would start by breaking the ice (awkwardness). Ensure that the student knows who am i and vice versa, a small chit-chat will be good :) Will usually ask what the student enjoy doing, how are his/her classmates, any favourite subjects and if he/she appear curious or wants to know me better will continue the conversation (some students prefer to talk about self than listen to others). In this situation will let them share more before sharing more about myself in the next lesson.
I will share with the students parents more about my joy for teaching :)
Note for self: Ensure student is comfortable with me, teaching style, asks questions, understands concept (not rely solely on memory)
Keeping Up with Curriculum

    My passion for teaching stems from my desire to help students in need and drive them to achieve their fullest potential. I have been teaching since my Junior College days in 2005. Upon graduation in 2006, I successfully applied as a Relief Teacher with MOE and was posted to MacPherson Primary School (MPS). In my 6 months there, I was privileged with the experience of carrying out the role of a full-time teacher as I sat in for a staff teacher who went on maternity leave. The unique curriculum at MPS also gave me the joy of working with students of different academic backgrounds and needs. Throughout the same period till Dec 2007, I was also engaged as a part-time tutor at Louis Learning Center. Though no longer with either institutions today, I continue to give private tuition.

    I am able to start tuition assignments immediately and am committed to see my students through at least one academic year.
    Due to my experience at MPS, Louis Learning Center and as a private tutor, I am able to effectively conduct both 1-to-1 classes and group sessions.
    I am available for group sessions on Thursdays and Fridays. Classes are held at Punggol.

    As a tutor, I truly believe that there is no such thing as a bad student or a student that is beyond help. Every child learns differently, at different paces with differing levels of confidence. That said, I am a tutor who takes time to understand the needs of my students and uncover their learning styles. My approach with students is always patient but firm, encouraging but honest.

    My aim as a tutor is to build up good academic character and confidence whilst providing disciplined methodologies. In order to do so, I work closely with parents to monitor the progress of my students, keep track of examination dates, class test schedules, etc. I also have a homework book for each student. From the homework book, parents can easily check in on the work assigned by me for the week and follow up on whether the work has been completed on time or not.

            I am currently serving my national service on the weekdays and a part time first year law student of University of London but I am able to teach during the weekends saturday and sunday. In additon, I am able to start work as soon as possible.             I will organise outdoor outing with my students by having some team building games like volleyball cycling at East Coast Park..to understand them each individual of them better so that to boost their physical and mental strength as i strongly believe that having a healthy lifestyle is the one of the key fundamental element to allow individuals to manage their school work efficiently. In addition , i will also speak to individual parents at the end of week to update them about their child progress on the academic aspect.
            Keeping Up with Curriculum
            I will structure my teaching for my students based on the syllabus requirement stated by the Ministry of Education for each individual student.. In addition, i will also print addtional notes and assignments to enhance their knowledge on the individual chapters of each subject as i strongly believe that reading shall not only confine to textbook itself. Each individual student should equip with flexible studies pattern and not rot -learning so that they are able to comprehend and answer adequately to each type of the requirement of the question during examination.

            From my perspective, I personally feel that a good tutor is one not only should he be academically -skilled in his area of teaching,he or she also must be donned with a passion for teaching..and exercise discretionary teaching skills to accomodate with each individual level of needs in their academic aspect.
