I have not much experiences as I have only taught 2 students in 2020. I taught Primary and Secondary School Mathematics. Both students improved their results and was complimented by their schools
Currently I'm studying in Singapore Polytechnic. I'm able to start March and commit 2 hours per class. Weekends are preferred but subjected to school timetable. Currently having school holiday.
Rapport Building
I like to start off by knowing what's the student's end goal in their education, such as career aspects and interests. This allows me to guide her to her goal though I'm just a tutor. I would also ask the student how's their day. Although education is important, I believe that a person's mind can change their life. As much as I need to care about their grades, I also need to monitor their feelings yet stay in my boundaries.
For parents, I like to praise their child and give constructive feedback when necessary. If their child has a problem, I will let the parents know as well.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
Before class, I will take a look at the current curriculum to refresh and let myself know what are the topics the students are currently learning now in order to answer their queries about these topics. For primary school topics, I will need time to adjust.
Although I only took N Level Additional Mathematics, I still learnt O Level Mathematics in my polytechnic as part of my module and I did well in it, scoring an A, hence I'm able to teach O Level Additional Mathematics.
As a Good Tutor
A tutor has to be responsible in order to account for student's progression and results. A tutor also has to know when to be nice and when to be strict in order to set boundaries.
