Rapport Building
I think the most crucial thing to do is to listen to perspectives from both the student and the parent in terms of their views on what is difficult about the subject to them or their child respectively. Only then can the tutor glean a clearer picture of how to help the student and on how to possibly provide insights for the parent in terms of supervising the student to make learning sessions more productive. Being a student myself, it would be slightly easier build rapport with the student given shared experiences when studying for the subject, and common stumbling blocks and tips can be provided to them. For the parents, I think the most important would be to build trust in that I would be capable of teaching the subject well, so I would try my best to be clear with subject concepts. This way, the parents would be comfortable with me tutoring their child.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
Being a student who has just taken the A levels last year, I would say that the curriculum crafted out by SEAB should remain the same as the curriculum I had gone through in school since it takes a few years from 5-8 years to change the curriculum significantly. Nonetheless, if there would be a change in curriculum, I would check the new assessment requirements which will be published by SEAB, and will read up on new topics if they are unfamiliar to me.
As a Good Tutor
-Empathetic. The tutor needs to recognise that certain concepts (that the tutor may have no problem grasping) may be extremely difficult and confusing for the student. Therefore, the tutor needs to be aware that different approaches to teaching the concept may be required for the student to master the concept.
-Encouraging. A discouraged student will not learn well. The tutor will need to encourage the student to face their fears, especially those who are struggling in a subject because they are lagging too far behind and thus are unwilling to face the mistakes and conceptual errors. Even for students doing alright, a little bit of encouragement will go a long way in boosting the student's passion for the subject.
