Keeping Up with Curriculum
I refer to the SEAB published guidelines and syllabi to keep myself updated on what topics will be tested as well as what skills are necessary to approach examination questions. I then plan my lessons accordingly.
As a Good Tutor
I believe that strong conceptual understanding and a good grasp of fundamentals are key in developing the mental versatility necessary to solve higher order problems with ease. As a tutor, I will focus on inculcating the aforementioned factors rather than merely learning and memorizing without understanding before moving on to higher order problems. When approaching examination questions or expounding on a concept, I elucidate clearly every single logical step taken to reach the final conclusion. This method promotes a mental versatility and cognitive independence that students will find useful when approaching other questions or learning other concepts. This will be of paramount importance for competence in the subject, especially in the long-term. At critical periods where short-term results are more important (such as periods leading up to major examinations), I will judge whether it may be necessary to use a more results-based approach and may change tack if necessary.
