Rapport Building
I use materials that parents/students have as well as prepare my own materials based on the interests and needs of each and every student. This is because it is crucial that students do not lose their joy of learning which would subsequently impact the efficacy of their education and their results. I often engage students in dialectical conversations rather than merely sticking to reading/writing because it is more interesting to them. To reduce boredom, I also alternate between assessment types (e.g. on a weekly basis for English, alternate between comprehension, essay, answering skills and techniques, etc.)
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I read through the syllabus and prepare my materials based on the updated curriculum, which some tutors do not do. Being from Raffles, I also have a wide network of ex-peers who collaborate to create up-to-date notes. On top of these, I have my own mentors and fellow experienced tutors with decades worth of tutelage experience. We often have discussions on maximising the efficacy of our teaching pedagogy.
As a Good Tutor
A good tutor would believe in what he teaches. And so, I am a firm believer in the value of education. As the top scorer of my school(s) with the best possible scores of 2 points for 'O' Level and 90 points for 'A' Level examinations, I hope to teach not just the substantive content of the subjects but also the study habits, critical thinking and exam skills required to do well in Singapore's education system. And I believe that a good tutor will also be able to do this through engaging methods that encourage learning.
