Tuition/Teaching Experience
I have taught 1st year university chemistry in New Zealand for 3 years in a
variety of formats. Many one on one students, group sessions and I was hired by
2 university halls of residence to teach 1st year chemistry to classes of about
40 students. I also have experience privately teaching high school chemistry in NZ
and second year organic chemistry. Chemistry is my passion.

I am available till the end of the academic year (December 2019) and will be fully dedicated to tuition during this time.
Rapport Building
I treat all students no matter what ability level with respect. I am very personable and patient with everyone.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I performed very well in my NZ high school chemistry exam (got a score in the top 0.3% of the national cohort). Following this I took university chemistry. This gives me a solid basis in chemistry that I then polish up with a thorough work-through of the current A levels text book and problem set. I am confident for any question posed for any level of high school chemistry.
As a Good Tutor
I have a good understanding of the learning process and how the brain assimilates and structures knowledge. I use this understanding to make learning as pain-free and edifying as possible. I have tutored students of all ability levels in my past and have had success with all. I start out by gaining an understanding myself of the critical facts the student needs to grasp in order to have a working knowledge of the subject. From there I explain those crucial concepts in a number of ways in order to impart a full understanding. For example, in organic chemistry most ionic mechanisms can be described by 4 fundamental 'steps', nucleophile attacks electrophile, leaving group leaving, proton transfer and rearrangement. Learning this along with the fundamentals of chemical reactivity GREATLY simplifies organic chemistry throughout high school. I also accept that the brain does not assimilate knowledge in a single day/session. The brain needs multiple encounters to learn. Knowing this I make sure to briefly repeat and re asses the students knowledge during the next session. I have found 2 encounters of this type is enough to impart a good working knowledge of a concept with a student. Finally I attack the problems. At the end of the day the student needs to perform well in exams. So I like to breakdown the types of problems and focus on the most efficient way to understand what the question is asking and then how to solve the problem.
