I teach my younger sister (secondary three) mathematics and chemistry when she needs the help at home. I am able to empathise with students who struggled in secondary school, as I did too.

Rapport Building
With students, I would tend to talk to them about how school is like, or what their hobbies are. From there, I will try and relate with their experiences. I would also try to tell them about my experiences in struggling to do well in school at first in order to show them that it is possible to achieve their goals if they work at it. With parents, I would explain to them my background and why I want to tutor (besides the financial benefits), which is to give students the extra help they need and aid in unlocking their potential like how I did for myself. I would also talk to the parents about what I feel their child should do in order to understand a concept or new chapter.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I check the cambridge O level syllabus learning outcomes for each subject, and also through analysing the more recent O level papers.
As a Good Tutor
Commitment, empathy, and patience are key qualities of tutors. A tutor should be committed to helping the student succeed, as it will ensure that the student has support throughout the entire journey of their education. Empathy is an important quality as without it, tutors would be unable to understand where their students are struggling and how they see various concepts. Lastly, patience is of utmost importance as students will always take time to learn concepts, and rushing a student will never help them progress to higher levels of understanding.
