Rapport Building
With parents, within the first few lessons, I will have a brief discussion with the parents on what are their concerns and expectation for the child and from the tuition such as is the tution inclusive of handling school work for the day and any school assignments. Subsequently, we will discuss on the pace and the child workload to establish the parent's concerns over both physical and emotional balance of the child. This will help me understand the child better as well.
With the child, there's a need to set down 2 rules -- first rule is share his thoughts especially if he has concerns. We will share personal views on his sharings or work out a solution to ease his concerns. This will take time. The child's trust in the tutor can help him gain confidence as well.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I have 2 children currently studying at primary school level. In addition, I have teaching Primary School syllabus since the 1990s. There's also Google and an abundance of information in the bookstore.
As a Good Tutor
I believe a good tutor is one who can help to identify a child's stength and weakness. In idenitfying the strengths and weaknesses, the tutor will find a balance solution to the child's learning progress. Not all children are learn the same way. A good tutor knows how the find a balance methodology and approach to help the child achieve his goals both in studies and in developing his interests.
