I typically use the first 20 mins of the first lesson to understand the student and the parent's academic expectations. And also gauge the student's learning style and personality. I believe it is important to have an open communication between the student, parent and teacher, to better cater the lesson to the student's needs. My tutee and i would also set goals together, and at every milestone, do a review on the status as it is important to identify progress and from there, plan what are the next steps to take in our learning.
