Rapport Building
I would usually begin by engaging tutors on their academic expectations. To better help them reach their goals, it is important to understand more specifically what they would like to achieve. Considering a student's level of motivation is often a reflection of his or her expectations, this usually allows me to gauge how I could better approach a student in terms of tutoring.

For younger students, this engagement usually extends to the parents as well. As their parents are their first teachers, it is important to get a rough sensing as to the learning ability of the child and the best methods to engage him or her.

Through these conversations, I build rapport with the students as they understand that I am tutoring them with the genuine intention of seeing them achieve their goals.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
First and foremost, i will do some research and my own reading as to the best learning materials to use to guide the student. For example the best guidebooks or assessment books i could make use of. Through this research, I am able to update myself on the most recent changes to the curriculum.

To ensure I understand the way students are being accessed, I would buy recent examination papers and ten year series to have a good understanding on what the examiner expects from the students. This will allow me to teach them how to score.
As a Good Tutor
The first quality to have, I believe, would be the ability to connect with the students. This is particularly so for younger students who often lack the courage to raise their concerns in fear of being scolded or embarrassed. As a tutor, if I am able to instill confidence in my students that i am someone they can freely talk to, I will be able to better understand which areas to cover and ways to approach tutoring him or her.

Another quality would be faith. It is important for a tutor to believe in his or her tutee if they are expected to succeed. I firmly believe a student is often able to tell if their tutor believes in their ability and are heavily impacted by this belief. In my years as a student, I have often come by teachers who far to often show they do not think their students would do well and are hence simply going through motions. This could only serve to worsen the students situation. Hence, I am committed to not giving up on any of my students, pushing them and working with them to the very last moment.
