Commitment / Other Details
I'm able to start tutoring immediately until March 2019, with the exception of a few weeks where I will be going on holiday.
Rapport Building
Before all else, I would first observe their general body language to see how receptive they are to me. However, I tend to start off by giving a short introduction about myself and offer them a quick handshake. For the students who may be a little awkward and shy at the start, I try to make an effort to be slower and treat the first lesson as a warm up, asking about their weaknesses as well as having them explain to me what they wish to gain from this session. I would encourage them to be open with any discomfort they may have about the pace or type of lesson. With the parents, I would inform them about their child's ability while recapping the session's content and what I have covered and revised with the student. I would make sure to ask them for any feedback that the student may have but did not tell me directly. I would monitor the student's progress and give breaks when I see their attention waning.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I practice with the TYS of each subject as well as make sure I have a copy of the syllabus on hand. I would also cross reference with school papers to pick out challenging questions which I think would help the students to internalise the concepts better and also gain more exposure.
As a Good Tutor
A good educator should be patient, caring and be able to gain the trust of their students. They should also adapt their teaching style and resources to best suit the student in question, as every student is unique and possess different strengths and weaknesses. They should be constantly striving to improve and thus be open to criticism. Lastly, I believe a good tutor not only wants to engage students in learning, they should also be passionate about guiding the willing to greater heights.
