Rapport Building
To have rapport with someone, they must trust you. I believe it is important for students to feel heard. Helping a child improve is more than just teaching them a skill and giving them practice. It is also about getting rid of the voice in their head that tells them they can't do it and learning to trust themselves. As such, I always make it a point to start by asking students what they feel their weaknesses are and set some goals for them. If they can see that they can overcome their perceived weakness, their confidence grows and that helps them improve faster. This would help them shift away from a fixed mindset that tells them they're incapable of doing better towards a growth mindset. In addition, a mixture of encouragement, games and jokes help to build rapport with the students.
I believe in working closely with the student's parents. I like to keep them updated of what my plan is for their child and let them know of their child's successes promptly. It is essential that we work together.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
When tutoring students, I ensure that I keep myself updated of the current syllabus defined by MOE. I structure the lessons such that I stick closely to the syllabus.
As a Good Tutor
A good tutor listens to the child and tailors the lesson to the child's individual needs. A good tutor helps to motivate not bring down the student's morale.
