Rapport Building
I normally build rapport by tapping on the Strengths Perspective Model when interacting with the students and their parents. Most importantly, I believe that every child has the potential to excel. Apart from the ultimate outcome [final grades], it's also my goal to inculcate the kid's interest and passion for that particular subject. As the saying goes 'give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime', I believe such a skill is essential for the student to further progress subsequently even without my assistance/help in the future.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I have several friends or ex-teachers whom I have maintained contact with and are in the education sector. Sometimes, I tap on their resources and distribute it to my students [with their permission, of course]. Otherwise, I would provide them appropriate examples after reviewing their school exam papers and selectively give them according to their progress and standards.
As a Good Tutor
We ought to be patient with the child and rather than lecturing and acting tyrannial or dictating what the child ought to do, I believe a conducive environment where the child can freely express his/her opinions is a good platform for him to realise that it's okay to make mistakes. Because then, he would start building up that confidence and be able to slowly learn from his mistakes. Building a healthy spirit within their young souls is also important because instead of being aggressivevly competitive over wrong reasons like pride, etc, we should teach them that it's okay to lose sometimes and what matters most is the journey along - where they learn new knowledge, where they acquire new skills and where they learn their mistakes and not commit them again. I believe passion and love for the child is also important. Without passion and love for the child, tutors will not be driven to upgrade themselves or bother themselves to keep up with their curriculum and know when and where are the important points that are often blind spots where students make mistakes.
