Rapport Building
I will approach the student as a friend more than a teacher as I believe that understanding the psychology of the child is important in allowing me to tackle the problem of his poor grades and craft a suitable teaching plan for him/her; however, I will be firm when I need to. Words of encouragement and acknowledgement when a student does well is important as well. I believe learning is everlasting and it should not be inhibited to only the curriculum, so I will expose the student to elements outside the normal curriculum that the school does not prepare the students for, hence deepening their understanding and interest in the subject. This deepened interest would potentially aid the student in doing better in these subjects; I will try to make each lesson fun and interactive for the student so that tuition is something they look forward to and not dread. For the parents, I will update their children's progress after every lesson and most definitely show confidence in the subject that I am teaching so they will trust their children with me.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
Doing recent test papers of several schools as well as those of major exams and national exams; also frequently visiting bookstores to look for any new assessment books, doing them, gauging their level of difficulty and matching them to my students.
As a Good Tutor
Patience is very important in guiding a student to excel in his subjects; if the student does not understand the question and the answer or method of deriving the answer, I will use several different methods to explain it to the student and not give up. To me, rote-learning is not the way of education and I would ensure the child understand the concepts behind before moving on. Great command of the knowledge in the subject that I am teaching is essential as well, so that I can be confident when I teach and answer all queries that the student may have during or after the lesson, such that the student can trust me in guiding him to excel. Building a relationship with the student is necessary so that the student feel that I am approachable and able to ask all and any questions, whether is it in or outside curriculum. Flexibility in teaching is also another quality that is good to have, as there is no one way of teaching style that should suit all the unique individual student efficiently, hence I will cater different teaching methods that prove the most effective for different students.
