Rapport Building
I believe in lifelong learning and character education. Language acquisition cannot be done in short-term nor can it be fruitful using rote learning. We need to cultivate interest and appreciation. However, if you are seeking quicker means of improvement, students must be ready to put in hard work and lots of memorising work. As language learners mature, users will realise understanding and using it effectively doesn't always require artistic expression and craft.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
Having taught for 7 years in school and adhering to the syllabus, it is clear that MOE wants students to be effective language users who appreciate the beauty of the language. Teaching language as a skill requires the breaking down of cognitive processes into understandings that the student can hold on for life. It is also imperative that the students be allowed to voice their opinion during the acquisition of the language as it is a social system and how the younger generations are going to use the language will affect how it would be taught and learned in future. I am trained with the latest pedagogies that support language learning such as visible thinking routines from Harvard. Strategic implementation of these pedagogies will allow students to acquire language from one aspect and improve in multiple competencies in their learning.
As a Good Tutor
I believe in the cultivation of character, discipline and self-management. Therefore, on top of imparting skills to learn the language, we are teaching students and children to be effective workers and learners. Resources aside, allowing the student to see how their learning will impact them in long term would be a final goal of my tutoring experience.
