I am able to start immediately and will be able to commit for at least year. My schedule is also relatively flexible as I am also studying for my Bar examinations.
Rapport Building
I think a good tutor is one who starts out being a friend to the student. When students know that they have someone to reach out to, they are more willing to be frank about the problems and issues that they are facing in school, academics or otherwise. More importantly, students are more receptive to listening and learning if I adopt this "mentor-friend" approach. Most students have issues with studying techniques and/or are distracted/not motivated to do work. This is probably the main reason why they are not doing well in school. For students like these, I try my best to figure out what is it that they are doing wrong and to work on proper studying techniques for the benefit in all other subjects. Unmotivated students need a mentor who is willing to listen to their problems and to teach them to understand how to learn and not to study. On the other hand, for stellar students who are already performing well in school, tuition is a platform for them to work harder on what they are already good in, so that they can achieve their A in school. As a tutor, I see myself as a friend and very much a mentor. Having gone through the rigour of Singapore's education, I understand the pressures that students face. I was lucky to have a very good support system at home and in school and I hope to be able to coach/mentor my students in the same way too. I am always happy to chat with my students on Whatsapp/SMS so that they can send me questions even on days where I do not have tuition with them. Even if they do not have any questions and would love just to chat with me - I am more than happy to chat/listen.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I keep myself updated with the news and I will go through the assessment books once in a while when I help to purchase my brothers' assessment books.
As a Good Tutor
I think that there is no "good tutor" but an effective tutor is one who is able to identify the students' weak areas and is able to devise a good strategy/studying technique to assist the student. I believe that it is far more important for me to teach students "how to learn" than "what to study" as the former helps the students to benefit in the long run.
