Rapport Building
Understanding how students study best and what interests them will be important in helping them exceed their potential in any subject. I would love to get to know each student individually during tutorials to observe their strengths and weaknesses in order to personalise their tuition sessions. To keep the subject exciting and relatable to each student, I will also try to find research that is relevant to what they are studying at school. I am friendly and easy to approach which, from recent experiences, comfort parents as they can ask me any questions regarding the status of their child's education. I am also open with my background in tutoring and helping students with different backgrounds and levels of understanding.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
As I have been overseas completing my Masters for the last 5 years, I have not been involved in the academia system in Singapore for awhile. However, I will be doing extensive research on the current Maths and Chemistry curriculum that is specific to each student at any level. I will be able to communicate with certain friends of mine who are currently teachers and tutors, who I can go to regarding the curriculum. As an international student, I have personally been through the International Baccalaureate (IB) system. However, this does not mean that I am not willing to study the Singaporean curriculum in order to help the students grow in their understanding for these subjects. I am a keen learner and am willing to do my best in order that these students surpass their expectations.
As a Good Tutor
As much as tutors are teachers, I believe that they should also be friends with their tutees in order to understand the way that they study best to cater to each student personally. Other than a good understanding of their topic, tutors should be patient and understand the difficulty of the subject for beginners. Having tutored before both in Chemistry and in Maths at a variety of levels, I am passionate about my subjects and always have new and exciting ways help each student understand the topic from a new perspective. Tutoring is more than just supplying the answers, it is giving each student a new understanding of the topic. I believe that I will be able to help bring a new level of understanding to my students, helping them with their problem solving and analytical skills which I have found extremely important both in academics and in all areas of life.
