Keeping Up with Curriculum
Having students from all educational level (Primary to JC), I am in touch with the SEAB syllabus. My two years in PFS (Prison Fellowship Singapore) gave me an opportunity to interact with students aged 7 to 12 (P1 to P6). Through interacting with them, I am now more able to communicate with students better. Moreover, I am able to understand issues faced by students while studying and what are the factors leading to them not scoring well for exam. Being an undergraduate, I am able to guide students not just in their studies but also how to cope with stress and tips for preparation for exams. Despite the constant changing of syllabus for primary and secondary level, I have been keeping up to date with the syllabus.
As a Good Tutor
As a tutor, my main responsibilities is to teach. Studying is not only about memorizing textbook content and constant practicing. It is about how one can absorb the information learnt and APPLY it to the questions. Hence, I would usually go through a summarized version of the content which is easier for the student to understand and reduce the time needed to source through the textbook for main points. Next, I will go through question analyse (Various exam question type) and help student understand what the questions are asking for. Subsequently, I would craft out a set of answers (ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT for ECONOMICS and SCIENCE) for the students to follow. Having obtained constant As for math during ALL my major exams, I am able to share with the students on how to do well for math and help them ace their exams too.
However, to be a good tutor, I will guide and mentor my students. Guiding them in terms of preparation for exams, coping with workload, stress management as well as time management. Stress is the killer factor resulting to the poor results of many students, having to deal with stress is crucial in obtaining good grades. Hence, I would share my personal experience and ways to reduce stress with the students. Moreover, having been through the same education path, I am able to gauge the amount of homework I give, knowing that they have many school work to complete.
At times, students need help not just during tuition time but also in their own free time when they are practicing questions. I would encourage them to ask me questions whenever they need help, because sometimes 1.5hrs or 2hrs during tuition is not sufficient for them to clarify their doubts.
To add on, I have been through various Math competitions (Australian Math Competition, American Math Competition, Singapore Math Olympiad and TI-shanghai Cup). Thus able to provide help if students are planning to take part in any of these competitions.
