I have started working in Rosyth School as a teacher upon graduating from NIE. I have been teaching there for 3 years. Besides teaching, I have done remediation programmes for my pupils and their results have significantly improved with no failures in my class. Students with zero knowledge on the topic were able to grasp the concept when one-to-one tuition was given outside curriculum time.
I am able to start immediately upon confimation and am able to give my all as a part-time tutor from afternoon till night time on weekdays and saturdays.
Rapport Building
As a form teacher, I usually set basic rules and routines with my students to avoid disruption during class time. I'm firm but not fierce with my students at the start and occasionally share jokes with them to ease tension. This allows them to treat me with respect as well as share information or feelings with me as a teacher. I communicate with their parents via whatsapp and emails. For urgent matters, I will call to inform them immediately. Also, I handle students with positive reinforcement methods and I use apps such as classdojo - point system to award students with points. The top 10 students with the highest points will receive a little gift from me. Besides individual point system, I also award the best group per term with small treats.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
Besides planning lessons beforehand, I also attend courses and workshops conducted by academy of teachers, external vendors coming to my school and attend sharing sessions from other teachers.
As a Good Tutor
The most important quality in a great tutor is patience. Just like teaching, if you do not have the patience and passion, you will never stay long in the career and students will dread attending your lessons. Also, giving compliments and words of encouragement means a lot to the student. As a tutor, if the student has shown even a slight improvement in their grades, praise them as a positive reinforcement goes a long way. The ability to make students like the subject is also a very important quality of a tutor. Instead of just teaching and drilling, the tutor should be able to come up with different activities and games to spark interest in the student.
