I've taught before a primary 6 student in year 2012, on subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Chinese. As she's a considerably weak student, she took foundation mathematics and foundation science. Also, her command of Chinese language is relatively poor. When her mother approached me, she was failing everything except English. After approximately 6 months of tutoring, she went to take her PSLE and fortunately, able to get into the school of her choice.

Rapport Building
By telling the parents truthfully about what is going on and discussing how we can help the student together may be a good way to build rapport, as we have a common purpose - to help the student academically.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
Don't put too much on your plate if you can't handle it.
I've learnt it the hard way - my A levels did not perform well as I'm too busy with many curriculum activities on hand.
