My passion for teaching started since the age of 16. To date, I have tutored at least 9 students, most in the subject of Accounting. It has been a fulfilling journey so far to be able to witness and help each of my students overcome their academic struggles. I believe throughout these years of tutoring, I have enhanced my skills to identify their learning problems, what motivates them and how to better encourage each individual in their learning process.
Currently, I am able to start immediately and my time is flexible.
Rapport Building
I believe in giving immediate feedback to both the students and their parents so that we can take actions quickly to help the student in his/her learning.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
In keeping up with the curriculum, I update myself with visits to the bookstores to read through the textbooks and get familiarised with the syllabus. Other students of the same level are also a reliable source to understand the curriculum.
As a Good Tutor
A good tutor should be able to understand and cater to each individual student's learning needs. As there are a lot of ways to go about imparting knowledge, being able to identify how a student learns is essential. Given my prior experiences, I have been able to structure lessons to make my students' learning experiences more enjoyable and effective.
Being able to motivate the student is also important for me. I believe we should give compliments regularly when students do well at a task, even if it is a small improvement. This can gradually build up their confidence in tackling questions and they would start associating positive emotions to the subject which will help them truly enjoy the subject.
Lastly, a good tutor should be able to set realistic goals for the student. Nothing beats the disappointment of not being able to achieve the (unrealistic) goals that has been set. The tutor should be able to unleash every student's potential a step at a time. It is unreasonable for anyone to expect grade A from a student who has difficulties trying to grasp the fundamentals of a subject in a short time frame. However that does not mean we should not strive for excellence. We should, without over stressing the student and setting an achievable target each time and increasing the goal as the student progresses.
