The new PSLE scoring system has been revealed and it is as per the diagram below. It is different from the current scoring system as it is independent of how other subjects fare. To achieve an AL (Achievement Level) 1 the student will need to score 90 marks and above.

The idea of this change is to dissuade a nation of Kiasu parents from focusing too much on academic performance. Instead, it wants to build a nation of citizens who will be ready to meet a volatile and uncertain future.  By taking up other activities like sports, music, art or programming that could develop a different skill set.

Will this help sway parents from exacting lesser pressure on academic performance?

As per asiaone.com and Strait Times, some parents think that the pressure is on to score 90 marks for their entire subjects and on top of which it will be good to have a CCA as back up. A parent has already thought about getting a tutor to help her kid brush up on the weaker subject.

In summary

I think the parents have to decide how to juggle between academic achievement and another skill set. They could perhaps look at their current workplace and ponder about the skills that could be necessary to make a living in the future.
