Rapport Building: Building rapport is something innate. As a tutor is who is rather young, I am able to connect extremely well with the students as I have walked their path just recently. I understand what kind of problems they are facing in their learning and in school as I have already been through it. I usually spend 15-30mins of the first lesson getting to know the student as it is very important to have a good student-teacher relationship before we start lessons proper. I believe I am one of the rare few teachers to constantly ask how the student is doing in school, give Christmas cookies, Chinese New Year Angbaos, holiday souvenirs, handmade notes and even their favourite bubble tea drinks! I believe that knowing the student well is very important as it builds trust and mutual respect, which makes learning so much easier.

Rapport Building: Communication is very important, whether it is with parents or with children. Speak their language. I am a parent myself, i can understand the anxieties parents are facing. From my children, I also understand the challenges they face, sometimes when even working hard is not enough. Empathy is very important. There needs to be a balance between this and the final objective in mind, which is to improve on the exam grades.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I personally coach my 2 children who are in lower pri and sec 1. Seeing my elder child through PSLE, managing his, and my, expectations. Identify his weaknesses, leverage on his strength and targetting at areas that needs improvement.
What I do not have in terms of experience as an MOE teacher, i make up in my sincerity towards each and every child. Once I take up the assignment, it’s my duty to help them improve and see them develop in confidence, to build up their interest in the subject and to find their own motivations to have their own breakthroughs.

As a Good Tutor: A good tutor is not just about drilling in the academics requirements. Identifying ways to open communication and child’s preferred ways of learning would provide much better results, which is what we ultimately want to achieve.
