I started giving Mathematics and Physics tuition since my JC days and went on to read Political Science, Communications studies and Sociology in NUS having decided that the humanities was more appealing to me than engineering.

Personally, success as a teacher is when I become redundant to my students. Given the amount of information out there, the role of the teacher is no longer that of an information/knowledge disseminator. Rather, the teacher has got to understand the thinking process of the learner and present the information in the manner which will spark curiosity in the learner.

The one thing which is lacking in Singaporean students is the hunger for knowledge and it is no wonder why given the way subjects have been taught. Essentially, a good teacher is someone who inspires learning and I expect my students to be able to become independent and reflective learners one day.

The new social studies syllabus is interesting because it gives students an opportunity to express their personal opinions on a wide range of topics. Regrettably, most students (and teachers) are uncomfortable with this because they do not read widely enough. I am fortunate to be placed in a prime position because of the introduction of the new SS syllabus and my training in Political Science and Sociology in NUS.

Social studies draws heavily on these two disciplines and that is why I am confident of delivering the kind of knowledge and thinking skills required by the new syllabus.

I like to teach history using the decontextualized approach to help the students appreciate the subject. This approach has the benefit of letting the students interact with the concepts alone without having to be burdened with historical knowledge. They will also start to see how they can apply what they have learned to their lives. Only after the students have grasped the historical concepts and skills will I recontextualize it for them and this makes learning history a breeze.

        I do not have any official tutoring experience but I have been teaching my neighbor's daughter (primary school) whenever she needs help in her school assignments. Being a student once, I am aware that patience is the key to teach students especially younger students.         As a good tutor, I feel that it is important to be patient and have to make sure the student actually understand, because there's no point in moving fast and cover everything if the student does not understand anything right from the start. As the saying goes, "You can't build a great building on a weak foundation", It is important to help students build a strong foundation so as for them to achieve greater results.

              I am able to start tuition starting April 2016 and will be able to commit until 2019, when I graduate from university.
              Currently, I am organizing a group tuition session for lower secondary maths every Tuesday at 730pm at a rental classroom near Woodlands MRT. The rate is $20/h per student.

              As a student tutor, not only do I teach my students the subjects I'm ask to, I'm also willing to act as a mentor for my students. Should they require help (coping with CCA/studies, problems with friends etc), they can look for me for advice even outside tuition hours and I will try my best to help them. This way, not only will I be able to understand my students more, but they will be more willing to trust and listen to me.

              For parents wise, I always keep them updated with my lesson plans and their child improvements. Once I decided on the best way to tutor a student, I will talk to his/her parents, identifying the student's strengths/weakness and how can improvements be made.
              Keeping Up with Curriculum
              First and foremost, I always look at recent examinations papers (State exams, school exams, new assessment books etc) and check out the marking and answering scheme. With that in mind, I will have a better understanding of what an examiner want to see in the answers during exams. This will help me tutor students on how to properly answer questions during exams.

              For content, I always make sure to check for any syllabus changes and do my own pre-tuition studying

                  I do not back out of a tution slot unless due to health reasons so attendance of mine would be good. At the end of the day I hope my students gain interesting the subject I am teaching and would like to do better in that particular subject.
