    Students: Before the lesson, I will always check-in on them. I attempt to understand the struggles they are going through in terms of their academic and life. I usually share my own learning experience with the students when I was in primary school and secondary school. I always praise whenever they understand/answer the concepts/questions correctly. In addition, I laugh with them during the lesson so that it makes the class more chilled and less solemn, while ensuring that the quality of the lesson is being met.

    Parents: I always text them before the first lesson to understand more about their child especially the weakest topics they need help the most. I share with them my teaching style and keep them updated about their progress.
    Keeping Up with Curriculum
    During the start of my tutor career, I purchased a lot of textbooks and assessment books, ranging from primary school to secondary school to keep myself updated with the curriculum. I also visited the SEAB and MOE website to take a look at the syllabus. This is to ensure that my notes are in line with the required learning objective.
    As a Good Tutor
    Being a good tutor means patient and responsible

    Patient: Some students are slow learner, and they require more time to understand the concepts. As such, the pace of the teaching is slow and may need more weeks to cover the same topic. Tutors have to adjust the pace and not carried away by their own emotions when students find it hard to grasp the concept. Instead, we should make the lesson more progressive rather than rushing through the concepts. There was once when I took 3 weeks to cover transport in human for Sec 3 express biology. Even though the pace was slow, it was very helpful for him and understand the topic fully.

    Responsible: A responsible tutor plans the lesson and creates their own learning materials for their student, which I do that to all of my students. I also synthesise textbook, assessment books, ten year series, school papers and come up with my own version of topical exercises. I am definitely not the type where I just solely go through exam papers and assessment book because i believe this teaching method is futile. Students would only know how to do the exact question, which is impossible for same questions to appear in their examination.

      I keep in touch with current MOE teachers and staff to understand curriculum changes, and follow the latest updates from MOE directly as well. I will always refer back to the official curriculum when starting an engagement to ensure the information is correct and up to date.

      Although I will utilise pre-prepared question sets and exam practice papers, I tend to customize the assignment and problem sets to tackle the student's weaker areas, and I do not believe in one size fits all lessons or assignments.

              Communication is very important, whether it is with parents or with children. Speak their language. I am a parent myself, i can understand the anxieties parents are facing. From my children, I also understand the challenges they face, sometimes when even working hard is not enough. Empathy is very important. There needs to be a balance between this and the final objective in mind, which is to improve on the exam grades.
              Keeping Up with Curriculum
              I personally coach my 2 children who are in lower pri and sec 1. Seeing my elder child through PSLE, managing his, and my, expectations. Identify his weaknesses, leverage on his strength and targetting at areas that needs improvement.
              What I do not have in terms of experience as an MOE teacher, i make up in my sincerity towards each and every child. Once I take up the assignment, it’s my duty to help them improve and see them develop in confidence, to build up their interest in the subject and to find their own motivations to have their own breakthroughs.
              As a Good Tutor
              A good tutor is not just about drilling in the academics requirements. Identifying ways to open communication and child’s preferred ways of learning would provide much better results, which is what we ultimately want to achieve.
