Rapport Building
I check in with my students throughout and at the end of each lesson to check their understanding, and maintain my own spreadsheet to track each student's progress. This allows me to prepare more or less worksheets and tailor each worksheet to target my student's weaknesses and ensure that they are prepared for exams. As a recent graduate myself, I can emphatise with my student's struggles and ensure that my lessons can fit in seamlessly with their school life.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I am very confident with the O level and IB curriculum, having graduated recently. I thus have notes that are up-to-date with the current syllabus. When planning lessons and creating notes or worksheets, I requently cross reference the syllabus guide provided by SEAB/IB and past year papers to ensure that the content I teach is relevant. This method also allows me to highlight answering styles preferred by markers to help students score.
As a Good Tutor
An understanding and level of confidence in the content tested in a must for the tutor. I believe this confidence must also come across during lessons and allow students to believe that their tutor can be a trusted source for advice. A good tutor should keep track of his/her student's progress and not adopt a one-size-fits-all style of teaching, but rather make tweaks for each student according to their needs. This requires dedication and empathy in understanding their students. A good tutor-tutee relationship is thus a cornerstone of being a good tutor. I believe good tutors should also be passionate in the subject, as this makes learning from them much more enjoyable and allows the student to develop a liking for the subject, which is a good starting point for improvement.
